Job Summary The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for performing specialized, skilled work in the operation of various types of heavy equipment used in the maintenance, construction, or repair of Walton County roads, bridges, or other facilities.

Essential Job Functions Operates dump trucks and heavy equipment to include steel wheels, compactors, loaders, skid steers, spreaders, bush hogs, graders, dozers, excavators, rollers, motorized pans, and backhoes Planes and smooths roads and other defined surfaces to appropriate grades, as instructed, or according to drawings, schematics, etc. Assists in planning for and installation of various drainage pipes and structures Prepares pits, or storage areas to stockpile dirt, sand, gravel, lime rock, etc. Maintains pits or storage areas to ensure proper drainage and safety of the overall site Operates hand tools, to include chainsaws, shovels, axes, rakes, etc. Installation of hay, seed, or sod as well as cutting trees, limbs, and shrubbery on the rights-of-way or assigned job sites Clears ditches, culverts, drains, gutters, and beaver dams Assists with traffic control, to include flagging and erecting barricades and signs Performs routine preventative equipment maintenance and minor repairs Prepares production reports, vehicle maintenance records, fuel sheets, time sheets, and daily work reports Adheres to work schedule and attendance requirements Performs other work as directed and required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of personnel rules and regulations, statutes, ordinances, regulations, and codes under which the Walton County BCC operates Knowledge of standard methods, materials, and equipment employed in basic construction and maintenance operations Ability to exercise independent judgement and initiative in applying standards to a variety of work situations Ability to plan, assign, and coordinate the work of a large semi-skilled to technically skilled staff Knowledge of physical hazards and proper safety precautions used in public works construction and maintenance Knowledge of the geographical layout of Walton County Ability to perform strenuous work under varying weather conditions Ability to work independently or in team environments on routine assignments with minimal instructions while meeting assigned deadlines Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing Ability to establish and maintain effective, courteous working relationships with public officials, peers, other divisions and departments, and citizens Ability to remain calm in stressful situations and to take a teamwork approach to the job by cooperating with others, offering to help others when needed, and considering larger organization or team goals rather than individual concerns

* Minimum Qualifications Required:* Three (3) or more years of professional experience operating heavy equipment Valid Class B (CDL) Commercial Drivers license Valid Drivers License

Preferred: Valid Class A (CDL) Commercial Drivers license Note: At the discretion of the hiring manager and/or the Director Human Resources an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Moves, lifts, carries, and places objects weighing up to 50 pounds ithout assistance. Considerable outdoor work is required. Works in outside weather conditions. Occasionally works in high, precarious places and occasionally is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. Travel between locations to effectively address the organizational needs of the department.

This position may be required to report for work when a declaration of emergency has been declared in Walton County.
