Position Summary

The Fleet Service Technician assists in all aspects of general maintenance and administration of the agency's automotive fleet within the Fleet Section of the Walton County Sheriff's Office. The Fleet Service Technician oversees and monitors fuel sites, maintains vehicles and vehicle maintenance records; administers the allocation of new or reassigned vehicles; and ensures procurement of necessary fleet supplies.

Pay Range Details:

• Trainee - $41,000
• Technician I - $45,000
• Technician II - $52,000
• Technician III - $57,500

Qualifications

Trainee:

• High school diploma or equivalent
• One (1) year related experience and/or training in automotive repair

*Or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the necessary requirements for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification within one (1) year of employment.

Technician I:

• High school diploma or equivalent
• One (1) certification from the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), and one (1) additional certification within one (1) year of employment
• Two (2) years related experience and/or training in automotive repair

Technician II:

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Two (2) certifications from the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), and one additional certification within one (1) year of employment
• Four (4) years related experience and/or training in automotive repair

Technician III:

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Four (4) certifications from the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), and one additional certification within one (1) year of employment
• Six (6) years related experience and/or training in automotive repair

Essential Job Functions

• Issues and replaces Fleet Keys.
• Inspects vehicles for possible damage and proper equipment; issues vehicle(s); assists with the allocation of new or reassigned vehicles to requesting departments/bureaus/divisions.
• Oversees the decommissioning of dead-lined vehicles from fleet inventory; prepares vehicles for sale at auction including all associated paperwork.
• Determines probability of resale value for parts salvage and/or recycling. Removes parts from dead-lined vehicles, inventories and stores.
• Inventories, stocks, and shelves emergency unit materials and supplies, e.g., flares, fire extinguishers, cages, fuel conditioner, batteries.
• Maintains and administers pool loaner car vehicles.
• Performs special projects as directed by the Fleet Service Supervisor.
• Prepares purchase requests for shop and office materials needed; maintains records of all materials used in order to monitor inventory levels.
• Maintains logs and reports of activities for all work in progress.
• Maintains and updates assigned vendor and vehicle maintenance records.
• May respond to callouts as required.
• May operate an agency vehicle.
• May be in an on-call status for any length of time due to storm or major event activation.
• Other duties as assigned.

Technician I and higher:

• Perform highly skilled mechanical duties involving the repair and maintenance of Emergency Fire Apparatus vehicles and equipment; Law Enforcement Vehicles, specialized equipment and technical task related to assigned area of responsibility.
• Prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports; manage annual maintenance logs in accordance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
• Diagnose, maintain and repair electrical systems components, ignition systems, computers, alternators, high voltage power generators, start r and batteries; diagnose, maintain hydraulic systems.
• Diagnose and repair front and rear drive axles, drive train components, belts, gears, chain drives and propeller shafts; repair faulty parts on equipment and vehicle fleet.
• Repair, adjust or replace engines, transmissions, differentials, and clutches and hydraulic and air brake systems; tune up engines and propane fuel systems.
• Fabricate and assemble parts for automotive and heavy equipment; modify and repair body panels and chassis parts.
• Operate various mechanical equipment and ensure the adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
• Perform vehicle and equipment safety inspections; provide detailed records of maintenance services performed; assist in the general maintenance and cleaning of shop area.
• Inspect, diagnose and locate mechanical difficulties on a variety of heavy-duty fire equipment and Law Enforcement vehicles; recommend solutions; perform preventative maintenance and repair equipment.
• Other duties as assigned.
