Job Summary
The Director, Enterprise Architecture is a senior technology leader within the Walgreens Enterprise Architecture organization, responsible for defining, evolving, and governing enterprise application and infrastructure architecture within assigned domains. This role partners closely with business, product, and IT leaders to translate enterprise strategy into actionable architectural roadmaps that enable modernization, scalability, security, and operational efficiency.
The Director contributes to the development of Walgreens’ enterprise architecture strategy, leads domain-level architectural direction, and ensures technology decisions align with enterprise standards, regulatory requirements, and long-term business objectives. The role plays a key part in driving transformation initiatives—particularly across global platforms and service delivery and infrastructure—while fostering reuse, simplification, and adoption of common solutions across Walgreens divisions. The ideal candidate will have a solution architect background that can be applied to a large breadth of technologies and broad organizational scope.
Outcomes influence major programs, cross-functional initiatives, and investment decisions, with moderate to significant impact on Walgreens’ technology direction and delivery. The incumbent represents the Walgreens enterprise technology vision and acts in alignment with the company’s strategy, purpose, and values.
Location & Work Model:
This role is based in Deerfield, Illinois and follows a hybrid work model, with an expectation of 4 days onsite per week and 1 day remote.

Job responsibility
Contributes to the development and evolution of enterprise application and infrastructure architecture strategy in alignment with Walgreens’ business and technology priorities.
Defines target-state architectures and transition roadmaps for assigned domains, balancing near-term delivery needs with long-term strategic objectives.
Evaluates emerging technologies, platforms, and architectural patterns to inform recommendations and future-state designs.
Leads and participates in architecture governance forums to ensure solutions align with enterprise standards, architectural principles, security requirements, and financial guardrails.
Develops, maintains, and enforces architectural standards, reference architectures, and design patterns.
Partners with solution architects, engineering, and delivery teams to guide solution design and resolve complex architectural issues.
Develops and maintains domain-level architecture roadmaps that guide modernization, platform evolution, and technical debt reduction.
Collaborates with portfolio, product, and delivery leaders to align investment decisions with architectural strategy.
Supports application and infrastructure portfolio management activities, including asset inventory, classification, and rationalization.
Works across business units and IT functions to identify opportunities to leverage shared platforms, reusable capabilities, and common services.
Acts as a trusted architectural advisor to senior leaders, product teams, and program leaders.
Communicates architectural direction, trade-offs, and impacts in clear, business-focused terms.
Supports large-scale technology and business transformation initiatives through architectural leadership and change enablement.
Helps drive simplification, standardization, and modernization across enterprise platforms and infrastructure.
Champions architectural best practices and continuous improvement across the architecture community.
Serves as a subject-matter expert and thought leader within Enterprise Architecture and the broader IT organization.
Provides mentorship and architectural guidance through matrixed leadership and community engagement.
Champions Walgreens’ customers (internal and external, as appropriate), drives for results, and models the company’s purpose and values.

External Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree and at least 7 years of progressive IT experience at a senior professional level OR
High School Diploma / GED and at least 10 years of progressive IT experience.
Experience contributing to enterprise or domain-level architecture strategy.
At least 5 years of experience working in Enterprise Architecture within a large, complex, and preferably global organization.
Experience leading cross-functional initiatives and influencing without formal authority.
Experience supporting or participating in large-scale technology change or transformation programs.
Strong stakeholder management experience within a matrixed organization.
At least 5 years of experience contributing to financial decisions in the workplace.
At least 5 years of direct leadership, indirect leadership and/or cross-functional team leadership.
Willing to travel up to/at least 10% of the time for business purposes (within state and out of state).
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in computer science, Mathematics or Information Technology or MBA.
Experience in retail, healthcare, or regulated industries.
Experience designing, building, and operating systems on-premise and in the cloud.
Experience in global or multi-region environments.
Expertise in microservices and event-driven architectures.
Strong DevOps point-of-view and experience in transforming organizations.
Experience modernizing applications.
