Job Title: General Utility Worker

Job Description

The General Utility Worker serves as an entry-level production team member in a meat-processing environment, performing a variety of general labor tasks rather than a single specialized function. This role supports safe, efficient, and sanitary production operations by following established procedures, maintaining cleanliness, and assisting with equipment setup, operation, and basic adjustments. The position requires strong attention to detail, reliability, and the ability to work in a fast-paced manufacturing setting with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to production operations by following all policies and procedures for meat processing, including Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulations.

  • Maintain all production areas in clean and sanitary condition throughout the shift.

  • Identify and promptly report any issues that may lead to unsanitary conditions to the appropriate supervisor or lead.

  • Remove product and packing materials from the floor to keep work areas safe and organized.

  • Properly dispose of and accurately track inedible products according to company procedures.

  • Separate and remove trash and recycling from production areas in a timely manner.

  • Stage production areas with empty containers and necessary supplies for the following shift.

  • Assist with preparing and disassembling equipment for meat-processing operations or sanitation activities.

  • Assist with the collection, opening, and reuse of rework materials, ensuring proper identification of product and production line to prevent cross-contamination and allergen issues.

  • Relieve co-workers for breaks, which may involve temporarily working in other production positions.

  • Accurately complete any assigned paperwork and documentation related to production, sanitation, or product handling.

  • Assist in training new employees accurately and clearly on job tasks and procedures.

  • Before leaving at the end of the shift, check in with the area supervisor or lead for any additional pass-down tasks or shutdown activities.

  • Perform visual inspections of cases to ensure labels are correct and code dates are clear and legible.

  • Make basic adjustments to machinery to support smooth production, including changing tape, code dates, ink, paper, film, cardboard, or pallets as needed.

  • Operate a manual hand jack to move materials, supplies, or product as required.

  • Communicate all equipment malfunctions or irregularities promptly to the appropriate personnel.

  • Prepare supplies and workstations so the next shift can begin operations efficiently.

  • Stage ingredients in 50 lb containers to maintain consistent product flow.

  • Arrange meat products as instructed and according to specifications.

  • Continuously comb, hang, transport, and stack product as part of the production process.

  • Inspect product on the conveyor belt to verify it meets quality specifications.

  • Perform all job duties accurately and efficiently, meeting expected production and quality standards.

  • Stand and walk for the entire shift while maintaining focus and attention to detail.

  • Lift and carry items weighing at least 50 lbs as needed during production and sanitation tasks.

  • Use both hands to handle products, tools, and equipment safely and effectively.

  • Work safely at all times, including when exposed to moving mechanical parts and working at elevated or precarious locations.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in general labor, general production, packing, or food manufacturing is beneficial.

  • Comfort working around meat-processing equipment and production lines.

  • Ability to learn and apply GMP and HACCP principles in daily tasks.

  • Willingness to assist with training new team members and supporting other positions as needed.

Work Environment

This role operates in a manufacturing environment within a meat-processing facility. Employees regularly work around moving mechanical parts and may at times perform tasks at high or otherwise precarious locations. The facility includes both colder areas, around 30 degrees, and warmer temperature zones, and employees may move between these areas during the shift. The noise level is usually high, and hearing protection and other safety equipment may be required according to company policy. The job is physically demanding and involves standing and walking constantly throughout the shift; frequent use of hands and fingers to handle products and equipment; reaching with hands and arms; and climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling as tasks require. Employees must be able to lift and carry at least 50 lbs and use both hands as necessary to perform production and sanitation duties. Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Davenport, IA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $18.00/hr.
