Amazon Lab Engineer, NPD Hardware in Cupertino, California

Description

The Network Products Development Hardware (NPD-HW) team at SJC3 owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS network switching products. We support all AWS data centers and networking switching equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on.

Our lab infrastructure at SJC3 is built with AWS networking racks and devices, along with test benches to develop, validate, and debug networking switching products in collaboration with ODMs and NPD Interconnect/SW teams. The lab includes multiple rack-size and device-size temperature chambers to stress test our products in corner conditions that emulate data center operations across the world. We count on lab engineers to maintain this infrastructure in working order and provide support to Hardware Development Engineers (HDEs) to unblock their development work.

We are seeking a lab engineer with hands-on hardware lab experience who is highly autonomous, detail-oriented, and possesses a strong team mindset with excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Key job responsibilities

Support team procurement needs by managing purchase orders, shipping, and receiving end-to-end

Coordinate with data center technicians, logistics, and security managers to remove and transfer devices for failure analysis

Set up network devices and test equipment per requirements

Lift and carry equipment up to 50 pounds

Collaborate with various stakeholders to remove project obstacles

Manage work and priorities through ticketing systems, email, and Slack to complete internal customer requests

Specify power and cooling requirements and ensure hardware racking/stacking is completed for new equipment

Maintain lab infrastructure including environmental chambers and work closely with facility teams to ensure smooth lab operations

Track and organize engineering samples and equipment inventories in the lab; proactively order consumables for lab operational excellence

Design and implement processes and workflows to improve lab operation efficiency

Perform cabling work including wire-stripping power cables and crimping cable lugs

Execute simple PCBA rework including soldering and desoldering 0402 size or larger resistors/capacitors

A day in the life

As a lab engineer, you will take on lab requests from team engineers to set up testbeds, cable equipment, and rework PCBAs. You will proactively maintain lab infrastructure by performing preventative maintenance on a set schedule and responding to issues within the lab. You will package and ship materials provided by engineers, help the team make purchase orders for engineers and lab infrastructure, and facilitate the transfer of broken devices from data centers into the lab for failure analysis. You will receive and inventory incoming packages.

We encourage lab engineers to look around corners while considering their customers' needs to improve development efficiency while utilizing the lab infrastructure.
