What you'll do
The Director of Pharmacy Services plans, organizes and directs all functions of the hospital pharmacy services. This job assures all legal, regulatory, and accrediting requirements are maintained at the best demonstrated practice. The Director, Pharmacy maintains a professional presence throughout the hospital and develops relationships with hospital clinical and non-clinical leaders. They are responsible for maintaining high standards of patient care, managing pharmacy staff, overseeing fiscal responsibility of the department, and optimizing pharmacy services to meet the needs of patients and healthcare providers. This leadership role requires a strategic thinker with strong clinical knowledge, operational expertise, and the ability to foster a collaborative team environment. The ideal candidate will be committed to excellence in patient care, innovation in pharmacy services, and continuous improvement.
Works with Chief Pharmacy Officer and BMC hospital administration on planning, organizing and directing pharmacy operations and ensuring compliance with all local, state and federal regulations
Monitors activities of the BMC Pharmaceutical Services Department and takes appropriate action as necessary to ensure efficient and effective operations
Works closely with the nursing and medical staffs and other clinical department managers in addressing pharmaceutical services issues as they are related to the services provided to all patients ranging from the newborn to the elderly. Understands that there are dosage variations between newborns, pediatrics, adolescents, adults and geriatrics and knows where to find appropriate information
Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors
Ensures and maintains departmental structures, operating procedures, and core staffing to meet demands for services at the respective hospital location sites which may be either onsite or off-site locations
Directs and controls the purchase and inventory maintenance of pharmaceuticals
Oversees the procurement, storage, and distribution of medications, ensuring accurate inventory management, and safe medication practices
Supervises medication storage and preparation areas throughout the facility; establishes specifications for the safe and secure storage of medications, chemicals, and biologicals
Directs and participates in the development/revision, implementation and communication of policies, guidelines and standards for the Pharmaceutical Services Department in accordance with the hospital’s policies and Joint Commission standards
Ensures adequate control and documentation of controlled substances
Ensures applicable CE records and licensure are maintained in department files
As applicable, may serve as the licensed pharmacy supervisor as recognized by the New York Board of Pharmacy
Directs and participates in the human resources management function for the department by coordinating the selection, promotion, orientation and performance appraisal processes
Coordinates the department’s in-service training
Attends and participates on hospital and system wide committees such as the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, Medication Safety Committee, Diversion Prevention Committee, BMC EOT Meetings, and others as assigned
Prepares department budget for personnel, operating expenses and capital equipment. Responsible for fiscal operation of the department
Reviews monthly financial statistics and plans expenditures within budget guidelines
Monitors and justifies all expenses exceeding budgeted targets
Ensures preparation and submission of patient charges and financial reports to administration in accordance with policy
Administers reports, documents, payroll records, statistical surveys, and other required data
Develops job descriptions and performance standards; evaluates, and counsels staff members on their performance
Prepares work schedules and monitors workload statistics; maintains appropriate staffing levels that match workload and promote patient safety
Works in the community to bring positive attention to the effective patient care that the hospital provides
Maintains a system of records in accordance with hospital policy for recording patient charges as well as maintaining adequate controls over requisitioning and dispensing of pharmaceuticals
Maintains formularies, information resources and references for preparations
Responsible for the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of performance improvement and PI activities assigned to the Pharmaceutical Services Department
Defines problems, collects data, establishes facts and draws valid conclusions
Interprets an extensive variety of technical instructions and deal with several abstract variables
Applies mathematical operations to such tasks as dosage calculations, formulation of pharmaceutical preparations and data analysis
Reads, analyzes and interprets pharmacy-related journals
Responds to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or members of the hospital staff
Effectively communicates information to management, medical staff, and hospital staff
Ensure that the department environment is free from recognized hazards that create a risk of injury to healthcare workers, patients, and/or visitors
Support and facilitate open and non-punitive communication between healthcare workers, patients, and families regarding clinical and environmental safety on their unit and when interfacing with other units, groups, and individuals
Support and facilitate employee and non-employee healthcare workers in reporting and directly addressing patient and environmental safety concerns
Maintains current New York pharmacist licensure
Sustains professional competence and promotes development through participation in in-services, workshops, seminars, and professional organizations
Completes all competence/skills assessment requirements
Develops guidelines for the clinical use of selected drugs including intravenous drug guidelines
Performs all staff pharmacist duties when needed
Performs similar or related duties as requested or directed
What we need from you
Education:
4 Year/Bachelor's Degree from an Accredited College of Pharmacy, required
Doctor of Pharmacy/PH.D. - Doctor level degree, preferred
Master's in Business Administration/Healthcare Management, preferred
Experience:
Minimum 5 years experience as a hospital pharmacist, with three to five or more years’ of supervisory and/or leadership experience, required
Licensure/Certifications:
Current and Active NYS Pharmacist License, or able to obtain reciprocity of pharmacist license to NYS within 6 months of hire, required

Pay Range
Salary is based on a variety of factors, including, but not limited to, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, training, and fair market evaluation based on industry standards. The above compensation range represents a good faith belief of the compensation range by Bassett Healthcare Network, and its entities and affiliates, at the time of this posting or advertisement.
Pay Range Minimum:
USD $155,958.40/Yr.
Pay Range Maximum:
USD $233,937.60/Yr.
