Job Title: Diesel Engine Mechanic
Job Description
This position seeks an experienced Diesel Engine Mechanic with at least 5 years of hands-on experience performing diesel engine replacements and repairs. You will work in a fast-paced body shop environment focused on buses, carrying out engine removals, diagnostics, and repairs with speed, accuracy, and high-quality workmanship while following established safety and shop procedures.
Responsibilities
Perform diesel engine removals and replacements on buses with a high level of accuracy and craftsmanship.
Diagnose mechanical issues on diesel engines and related systems and complete necessary repairs with minimal supervision.
Execute all assigned work in a timely and efficient manner while maintaining high-quality standards.
Follow all safety protocols, shop rules, and company procedures at all times.
Inspect engines and components after installation or repair to ensure proper functionality and reliability.
Use power tools, body shop tools, and other equipment safely and effectively to support engine and related repairs.
Collaborate with shop leadership and other technicians to meet production and turnaround goals.
Support related repair activities such as general mechanical repair, collision-related mechanical work, metal fabrication, and welding when required.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, including proper care and storage of tools and equipment.
Document work performed as required by shop processes and communicate any issues or delays promptly.
Essential Skills
Minimum 5 years of experience working on diesel engines in a shop or fleet environment.
Proven experience performing diesel engine swaps and replacements, preferably on buses and/or heavy trucks.
Strong understanding of diesel engine systems, components, and diagnostic procedures.
Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
Proficiency with power tools and body shop tools used in engine and mechanical repair.
Capability to diagnose mechanical issues and complete repairs with minimal supervision.
Ability to read and follow shop procedures, safety guidelines, and technical instructions.
Ownership of a complete set of personal tools suitable for diesel engine work.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience working on transit buses in a fleet or rebuild setting.
Experience with major bus manufacturers such as Nova Bus, New Flyer, or Gillig.
Experience in a high-volume fleet maintenance or engine rebuild facility.
CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) engine experience.
Familiarity with OEM procedures and technical documentation.
Experience using diagnostic software and electronic tools for diesel engines.
Exposure to collision repair environments, including metal fabrication and welding.

Work Environment
This role is based in a body shop environment focused on buses and heavy vehicles. You will work Monday through Friday on the first shift from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The shop uses a full range of body shop tools, power tools, and equipment for diesel engine, mechanical, collision-related, and fabrication work. The environment is fast-paced and production-oriented, with an emphasis on safety, cleanliness, and organization in the work area. You will frequently work around heavy equipment, engines, and vehicles, and will wear appropriate shop attire and personal protective equipment as required for a busy repair and rebuild facility.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Commack, NY.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $45.00/hr.
