Battelle’s Medical Device Solutions assists medical device and pharmaceutical companies, from startups to Fortune 20 companies. You will be a core team member in the design and development of medical and commercial products and systems, applying creative thought and state-of-the-art technology to solve technical design problems. This role contributes to all phases of product design including initial requirements definition, conceptualization, and feasibility assessment/demonstration; detail design including engineering analysis and testing; verification and validation testing and documentation; transfer to the client and follow-on support as needed. Projects typically involve multidisciplinary teams so you will regularly interface with electrical, software, systems, human factors, and other engineers as needed for the project. You will work closely with the program manager as both an individual contributor and or a technical lead responsible for guiding other engineers also depending on the needs of the project.
Responsibilities
Participate and lead in shaping the product design through upfront brainstorming and concept generation, as well as defining functional needs, and system requirements
Accountable for the detailed mechanical design of critical products, subsystems, and components from concept through verification, including hands-on modeling, analysis, and refinement
Identify and implement a risk based approach to product development challenges
Mentor junior staff in the application of technologies and processes to solve product design and development challenges
Direct the work of technicians and junior staff for hands-on assembly and testing work to demonstrate feasibility or refine the design solution.
Work with Project Management to complete and or lead tasks within budget and schedule
Generate and or review design, development and supporting documentation following QS/ISO processes and procedures
Prepare and communicate results and progress using written and oral communication to project leadership and the client
Work with management and Team Leads to develop and participate in growth activities for junior staff
Participate in business development activities including calls/visits with prospective clients, taking ownership of task breakdown and level of effort estimation, and leading proposal development for relevant aspects of the project
Key Qualifications
B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university with fifteen years working experience in product development, solution design, or engineering consultancies
Design engineering experience with medical technology or simulated regulated technology requiring traceability of the design over time
Fluent using SolidWorks (e.g. SolidWorks)
Design for plastic injection molded part experience. Familiarity with plastic part mold design and incorporation of key aspects into component designs (cavity design, gate/runner/ejection strategies, etc.)
Design for manufacturing experience e.g. machined parts, sheet metal, packaging of electronics/cables, etc., for products
Project or technical task leadership experience
Self-starter and continual learner
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in the design and development of medical devices, diagnostic instrumentation, or drug delivery devices is highly preferred
Understanding of the FDA Quality System Regulation (QSR) and involvement in an ISO13485 operational environment
Experience in the design of high tolerance plastic components for injection and other molding processes.
Hands on general lab skills e.g. building and testing prototypes. Familiarity with rapid prototyping processes and applications.
Literate in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing per ASME Y14.5-2009
Experience using FEA analysis tools with a strong preference for ANSYS
