The Ohio State University (OSU) College of Pharmacy invites applications for the position of Assistant Director of First Year (P1) Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPE) within the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program.

This staff, specialty practice pharmacist role reports to the Assistant Dean of Experiential Education and is responsible for the strategic leadership and operational oversight of the P1 IPPE program, with a focus on community pharmacy practice rotations and immunization training. The Assistant Director of P1 IPPE plays a key role in orienting PharmD students to experiential education; supporting their academic and professional development; ensuring high-quality experiential learning outcomes; and building relationships with external partners.

Key Responsibilities

The Assistant Director of P1 IPPE will:

  • Orient students to the experiential education program and support their academic and professional needs

  • Design, deliver, and assess experiential lecture content for first-year students

  • Coordinate and manage first-year IPPE rotation experiences

  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student experiential rotations and implement continuous quality improvement initiatives

  • Design and deliver individual and group preceptor development activities to promote preceptor success

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with experiential education partners

  • Conduct periodic site visits to experiential locations throughout central Ohio and, on occasion, across the state

  • Support experiential programming for second-, third-, and fourth-year programs as needed

Practice Component

This position includes a 40% clinical practice component at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (OSUWMC). In this role, the pharmacist will precept PharmD students completing Medication Reconciliation (Med Rec) IPPE rotations, modeling best practices in patient care and experiential learning.

Responsibilities include:

  • Staff assigned shifts as a preceptor

  • Model best practices in patient care, provides direct training and evaluates student performance

  • Ensure accurate medication histories in accordance with OSUWMC policies and procedures

  • Emphasize patient safety and the critical role of medication reconciliation, contributing to safe and effective transitions of care

Additional Expectations

As the Office of Experiential Education continues to evolve, the Assistant Director must demonstrate flexibility and adaptability. Responsibilities may change over time to meet programmatic needs.

The Assistant Director of P1 IPPE must:

  • Demonstrate a strong passion for training the next generation of pharmacists

  • Manage complex processes to optimize student outcomes

  • Develop and implement actionable quality improvement plans to enhance aspects of the experiential program

  • Be detail-oriented and have strong organizational skills

  • Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Be proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, etc.)

  • Be flexible and available to interact with students and preceptors; while hours are typically in the range of 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., they may include infrequent evenings and weekends

  • Complete other duties as assigned

Work Environment

This position will require in-person attendance on The Ohio State University Columbus campus and The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center for most responsibilities.

The Assistant Director of P1 IPPE will join the Pharmacy Practice and Science Division, a group of more than 25 faculty engaged in teaching, research, and clinical practice, recognized for innovative practice models, strong research programs, and leadership in national pharmacy organizations.

Required Qualifications : BS in Pharmacy or PharmD degree from an ACPE accredited program; Ohio pharmacist licensure or eligible to become licensed as a pharmacist in Ohio; Patient care experience as a pharmacist; Experience delivering presentations in academic and/or professional settings.

Desired Qualifications : APhA Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery Certificate; Recent patient care experience as a pharmacist for a minimum of 3 years; Served as an IPPE or APPE preceptor frequently for pharmacy students for a minimum of 2 years; Completed a PGY1 residency or equivalent experience.

Additional Information:

The pay range for this job profile is $118,500 - $145,250. The offer for this position will fall within this range based on internal equity, unit's available budget, and the candidate's qualifications.
