Element Materials Technology EMC RF Test Engineer in Columbia, Maryland
Overview
We are seeking an EMC/RF Engineer to support regulatory compliance testing of wireless and electronic devices. These roles require proficiency in various core business and technical skills, including but not limited to, compliance to established safety rules, code of conduct, and company policies / procedures. This role involves hands-on RF and EMC testing, execution of standardized test procedures, data analysis, and support of FCC and international certification programs across a wide range of technologies and industries.

Salary Range:
$30 - $55 p/hour (non-exempt)
Varied Work Shifts:
7am - 4pm ET
3pm - 12am ET (includes 10% shift differential)
Responsibilities
Perform EMC and RF compliance testing in accordance with applicable regulatory and standards requirements
Operate spectrum analyzers and related RF test equipment for radiated and conducted emissions and transmitter measurements
Execute testing and guide problem solving to unlicensed transmitter rules (e.g. FCC Parts 15B, 15C, 15E,and 15F) and licensed transmitter rules (e.g. FCC Parts 22, 24, 27, 30, 90, and 96)
Set up, configure, and troubleshoot test setups in anechoic chambers, shielded enclosures, and open-area test sites
Provides technical and engineering leadership and supports the development of new technologies within a local laboratory and potentially across the Element enterprise
Share and promote critical testing knowledge, best practices, and laboratory protocols throughout the team
Provide technical input and support for business development opportunities with new and existing customers
Collect, analyze, and document test data; support the preparation and review of regulatory compliance test reports
Assist in the professional development of technicians and engineers within the local laboratory
Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and customers to resolve technical and compliance-related issues
Travel up to 15% for training, inter‑site collaboration, customer support, or project-specific needs
Skills / Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, STEM, or a related technical field from an ABET‑accredited institution, or equivalent experience
Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience with RF Test equipment, such as spectrum analyzers, communication tester, power meters / sensors, antennas, amplifiers
Working knowledge of regulatory requirements across major regions, including FCC (U.S.), ISED Canada, and EU directives
Strong understanding of RF fundamentals, including duty cycle, bandwidths, powers, spurious emissions, and measurement uncertainty
High attention to detail with the ability to follow standardized test methods and produce accurate, repeatable results
Preferred Qualifications
Familiarity with CE marking and EU RED requirements, including radio and EMC immunity testing
Experience with European standards, such as EN 301 xxx series, EN 55032 / EN 55035, and EN 61000‑4‑x immunity methods (e.g., ESD, radiated immunity, EFT, surge)
Prior experience in an accredited EMC/RF compliance laboratory
Exposure to wireless technologies such as Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi 6E/7, LTE, 5G, mmWave, CBRS, NFC, WPT, PTCRB or IoT devices
