Northrop Grumman Space Systems—Missile Defense Integration offers an excellent opportunity for a Sr Principal Software Engineer – Team Lead (26-151) to join our team of skilled and diverse professionals. Based in Colorado Springs, CO, this role is essential to supporting the U.S. President, the Secretary of Defense, and combatant commanders at the strategic, regional, and operational levels.
This position does not provide relocation assistance and requires on-site work with no remote options.
Position Overview:
The Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) program is the integrating element of the Missile Defense System. It is a vital operational system that enables the U.S. president, the secretary of defense, and combatant commanders at the strategic, regional, and operational levels to systematically plan ballistic missile defense operations, collectively observe the battle as it develops, and dynamically manage designated networked sensors and weapon systems to achieve global and regional mission objectives. C2BMC supports a layered missile defense capability that enables an optimized response to threats across all ranges and phases of flight. C2BMC is the force multiplier that globally and regionally networks, integrates, and synchronizes autonomous sensor and weapon systems and operations to optimize performance. C2BMC is an integral part of all system ground and flight tests that verify and exercise all current and future missile defense system capabilities.
The Software Engineering Team Lead will support the design, implementation, and operation of software solutions to address program infrastructure challenges and enhance the efficiency and throughput of the Agile Release Train (ART). They will lead a team of 5–15 engineers, delivering high-quality software across projects using Python, Java, and Ansible . This role blends technical leadership with hands-on engineering, requiring a solid background in software development, infrastructure, and modern DevOps practices, including Infrastructure as Code ( IaC ) and CI/CD pipelines .
Essential Functions:
Strong background in software engineering, solid understanding of physical and virtual IT infrastructure, and experience leading teams and projects
Will regularly interface with customers to refine requirements and present technical solutions, ensuring alignment with program objectives and contractual commitments
Operating in an Agile Scrum environment, the Team Lead will plan and execute work aligned with customer needs while driving engineering excellence, standardization, and continuous improvement across the team
Lead, mentor, and manage a team of engineers, providing technical direction and supporting their performance development
Plan, coordinate, and execute software development activities across multiple projects and Agile Release Train (ART) initiatives
Design, develop, test, debug, and maintain software solutions with Python, Java, and Ansible
Drive the implementation of CI/CD pipelines and Infrastructure as Code ( IaC ) to enable efficient, reliable software delivery
Serve as the primary technical lead, making design decisions and guiding the development of solutions to complex engineering problems
Ensure adherence to the full software development lifecycle ( SDLC ), including requirements analysis, design, implementation, testing, and deployment
Interface directly with customers to gather requirements, clarify needs, and present technical solutions
Manage technical, cost, and schedule performance, including risk identification, mitigation, and change management
Establish and enforce engineering standards and best practices, and ensure compliance with program and contractual requirements
Define, track, and communicate key performance metrics, project status, and resource needs to program and engineering leadership
Perform any other tasks required by the program
Basic Qualifications:
Please list your current security clearance and IAT or relevant certifications on your resume, if applicable.
A Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field from an accredited university, along with 8 years of experience; or a Master’s degree in a related field with 6 years of relevant work experience; or 12 years of relevant work experience may be considered as an alternative to a degree
Applicants must have a current, active DoD 8140 certification at IAT Level II or higher (such as Security+ CE, CISSP, SecurityX, CCNA Security, CySA+ **, GICSP, GSEC, SSCP, CASP+ CE, etc.) at the time of application, which is required to start. The candidate is responsible for maintaining their DoD 8140 certification throughout the entire contract period
Applicants must have a current, active in-scope DoD-issued Secret security clearance at the time of application, which is required to start with the ability to obtain Top Secret security clearance
A current and active Project Management certification, such as Project+, CAPM, or PMP , is required at the start date or must be obtained within 60 days of the start date
Excellent written, verbal, and presentation communication abilities, capable of clearly explaining technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
Demonstrated experience leading high-performing engineering teams and delivering complex technical projects
Proven experience in software engineering, DevOps , or full-stack development , with a solid understanding of modern development practices
Experience developing in Python, Java , or similar programming languages
Experience implementing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines and practicing Infrastructure as Code ( IaC )
Experience applying Agile methodologies (e.g., Scrum, SAFe ) to engineering teams
Demonstrated project management experience, including planning, execution, and delivery of technical projects
Experience managing and reporting on cost, schedule, and technical performance across projects or programs
Experience working with customers and stakeholders, including presenting technical solutions and leading technical discussions
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to balance strategic (long-term) and tactical (short-term) priorities in a collaborative environment
Preferred Qualifications:
Applicants with a current, active in-scope DoD-issued Top Secret security clearance at the time of application are highly preferred
Prior experience as a Team Lead, Technical Lead, or Product Owner in an Agile environment
Experience in developing, tracking, and reporting Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) as well as other engineering or program metrics
Demonstrated ability to quickly learn, evaluate, and apply new technologies in fast-paced environments
Experience implementing or scaling CI/CD pipelines and Infrastructure as Code ( IaC ) within enterprise environments
Experience with cloud or hybrid infrastructure environments (e.g., AWS, Azure , or similar)
Familiarity with DevOps tools and practices (e.g., automated testing, configuration management, and containerization)
Experience supporting customer-facing programs, including presenting to senior stakeholders or to external customers
Experience improving team processes, engineering standards, or Agile maturity within an organization
Previous experience with C2BMC or comparable command-and-control systems

Primary Level Salary Range: $129,300.00 - $193,900.00
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
