The Software Test Engineer provides comprehensive test engineering support for mission-critical government systems. In this role, you collaborate closely with software development, information assurance, systems administration, and network engineering teams to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve functional deficiencies. You participate in technical working groups and configuration control boards, support operational testers during Force Development Evaluations, and help shape software applications that meet complex mission needs through rigorous testing and validation.
Responsibilities
Provide test engineering support and technical advice to government customers for mission-critical software systems.
Participate in technical working groups and configuration control boards to represent test and evaluation perspectives.
Collaborate with software development engineers, information assurance engineers, system administrators, and network engineers to troubleshoot and resolve functional deficiencies.
Work closely with software development teams to ensure applications meet defined mission requirements through comprehensive testing.
Provide technical assistance to operational testers performing Force Development Evaluations, including guidance on test approaches and results interpretation.
Develop, review, and maintain detailed test plans, test procedures, and test reports for component-level and system-level testing.
Create, execute, and maintain manual test cases and test scripts to validate software functionality and performance.
Design and develop test cases based on system requirements, ensuring full coverage and traceability to technical requirements and test specifications.
Conduct development testing at both component and system levels, ensuring that all features and interfaces perform as intended.
Prepare, review, and analyze failure reports, including root cause analysis and impact assessment.
Verify corrective actions and fixes, ensuring that defects are resolved and do not introduce new issues.
Perform various types of testing, including functional, regression, integration, system, and user acceptance testing.
Collect, analyze, and interpret test data using appropriate statistical and analytical methods to support reliability and maintainability assessments.
Ensure requirements validation and traceability from high-level mission needs through technical requirements and test specifications.
Identify, document, and track defects through their lifecycle using appropriate tools and processes.
Communicate test progress, results, risks, and issues clearly and effectively in written, oral, and presentation formats.
Collaborate with team members using modern development and test tools, including version control and automation frameworks.
Contribute to continuous improvement of test processes, methodologies, and documentation.
Essential Skills
Active Secret Security Clearance with the ability to obtain a Department of Defense Top Secret Security Clearance and eligibility for SCI.
Four years of progressively complex experience in probability, reliability, maintainability, statistical analysis methods, sampling, and test and evaluation techniques.
Four years of experience in data collection and familiarity with applicable regulations and standards related to testing and evaluation.
Specific experience in development testing at both component and system levels.
Experience preparing, reviewing, and analyzing failure reports and verifying corrective actions.
Experience in requirements validation and translating requirements into technical requirements and test specifications.
Experience preparing and reviewing detailed test plans, test procedures, and test reports.
Proficiency in manual software testing, including creation and execution of manual test cases and test scripts.
Experience in test case development and test case design.
Familiarity with automated testing concepts and tools.
Ability to use tools such as GitLab or similar platforms for version control and test-related workflows.
Strong written, oral, and presentation communication skills.
Strong attention to detail to ensure thorough testing and accurate results.
Strong analytical skills for effective test planning, execution, and results interpretation.
Proficiency in creating detailed test plans, test cases, and test scripts.
Experience executing test cases and documenting clear, reproducible test results.
Skill in identifying, documenting, and tracking defects through resolution.
Familiarity with various types of testing, including functional, regression, integration, system, and user acceptance testing.
Experience with Python for scripting or test automation support.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience supporting government or defense-related software systems and missions.
Experience working closely with multidisciplinary technical teams, including software development, information assurance, systems administration, and network engineering.
Experience supporting Force Development Evaluations or similar operational test activities.
Ability to work independently in a remote environment while maintaining strong communication and collaboration with on-site and distributed teams.
Comfort participating in technical working groups and configuration control boards.
Interest in contributing to cutting-edge work in space and defense-related missions.
Work Environment
This role offers a mostly remote work environment with an initial on-site period for onboarding and integration. During approximately the first 30 days, you work on site in Colorado Springs to complete in-person onboarding, build relationships with the team, and obtain necessary credentials. After this initial period, you primarily work fully remote, with the expectation of traveling to Colorado Springs at least twice a month for credential refresh activities and on-site meetings. You collaborate closely with a software development team engaged in cutting-edge work supporting Army and United States Space Force missions. The work involves modern software development and testing tools, including platforms such as GitLab and automated test frameworks, in a professional environment that emphasizes mission impact, technical excellence, and close partnership with government customers.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Colorado Springs, CO.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $53.00/hr.
