Senior Network Engineer / Architect

Role Overview

The Senior Network Engineer / Architect is responsible for designing, planning, implementing, and supporting information technology (IT) networks and architectures for United States Space Command (USSPACECOM) command and control facilities. This role supports network security implementation, performance monitoring, troubleshooting, and capacity planning. Work is performed onsite at government facilities in Huntsville, Alabama.

The position manages multiple projects concurrently from design through implementation and provides installation oversight for new facilities in coordination with functional area managers (FAMs) and engineering teams.

Key Responsibilities

Design and plan IT network architectures supporting command and control environments

Develop detailed data center network design plans in alignment with Department of Defense (DoD) requirements and standards

Create and maintain network diagrams, schematics, and supporting technical documentation

Oversee installation and configuration of network hardware and software, including routers, switches, firewalls, and related equipment

Ensure network components are properly configured, optimized for performance, and secured

Implement DoD-approved security protocols and controls within data center network environments

Configure firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and other security appliances to protect against network threats

Monitor network performance to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve issues, ensuring optimal performance and minimal downtime

Utilize network monitoring tools to track bandwidth utilization, latency, and key performance indicators

Provide technical support and troubleshooting for network-related issues within data center environments

Collaborate with IT teams to diagnose and resolve complex network problems

Conduct capacity planning to support current and future data center requirements

Design scalable network solutions to support organizational growth

Engineer and sustain complex enterprise network architectures, including core, distribution, and access layers, as well as facility demarcation points

Lead the installation, configuration, and optimization of enterprise routers, firewalls, and cryptographic devices (e.g., TACLANE) within secure facilities

Produce detailed technical documentation, including logical and physical topology diagrams, interface documentation, and as-built records for MILCON and GSA-leased facilities

Collaborate with Cybersecurity and Risk Management Framework (RMF) teams to provide technical evidence supporting security controls and Authorization to Operate (ATO) activities

Validate network equipment against DoD Approved Product Lists (APL/EPL) and support Bill of Materials (BOM) development for large-scale procurement

Support transition planning from temporary facilities to permanent MILCON infrastructure while ensuring continuity of mission-critical services
