Job Title: Tool and Die Maker

Job Description

The Tool and Die Maker will support production by building, maintaining, and repairing tooling for metal stamping, injection molding, thermoforming, and related manufacturing operations. This role involves reading and interpreting mechanical prints and drawings, performing precision machining, executing preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting tooling issues to minimize production downtime. The position requires hands-on work with both traditional machine shop equipment and, preferably, CNC machinery in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret mechanical prints, drawings, and blueprints to build, repair, and modify tools and dies.

  • Set up and operate traditional machine shop equipment and machines to manufacture and repair tooling components.

  • Maintain and repair tooling for metal stamping, injection molding, thermoforming, and other production processes to support continuous operations.

  • Execute preventive maintenance schedules on tooling and equipment to reduce production and operations downtime.

  • Use measuring devices such as calipers, height gauges, and radius gauges to verify dimensions and ensure parts meet specifications.

  • Hold and maintain tight tolerances of 0.002 inches or less on machined and assembled components.

  • Troubleshoot tooling and equipment issues and perform maintenance repairs to restore proper function.

  • Conduct maintenance on injection molding and plastic molding tooling, including plastic injection molding and blow molding tools, as needed.

  • Support production and operations by ensuring tooling is ready, safe, and capable of meeting quality and throughput requirements.

  • Execute work orders accurately and in a timely manner, documenting work performed as required.

  • Fill out changeover check sheets and other applicable paperwork to support quality and production tracking.

  • Communicate effectively with quality control to identify and help solve root cause problems related to tooling and equipment.

  • Use PC skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel, to record maintenance activities, update logs, and complete required documentation.

  • Collaborate with production, maintenance, and quality teams to improve tooling performance and reduce downtime.

  • Follow all safety procedures while working around moving mechanical parts, high-noise areas, and varying temperatures.

Essential Skills

  • 1–3 years of experience in tool and die work.

  • Ability to read and understand mechanical prints, drawings, and blueprints.

  • Ability to use precision measuring devices such as calipers, height gauges, and radius gauges.

  • At least 1 year of experience in the setup and operation of machines and other traditional machine shop equipment.

  • Ability to consistently hold tolerances of 0.002 inches or less.

  • Experience executing work orders and preventive maintenance schedules to reduce production and operations downtime.

  • Hands-on experience with injection mold tooling, mold tooling, and plastic injection molding environments.

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and experience with mechanical maintenance and repair.

  • Ability to troubleshoot tooling and equipment issues in a production environment.

  • Basic PC skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.

  • Ability to complete changeover check sheets and other required paperwork accurately.

  • Ability to communicate clearly with quality control and production personnel to resolve root cause issues.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in CNC programming, setup, or general CNC machine operation is preferred.

  • Experience operating or maintaining injection molding machines and plastic molding equipment, including blow molding and PVC-related processes.

  • Familiarity with preventive maintenance practices for metal stamping, injection molding, thermoforming, and other tooling.

  • Preferred experience using calipers, electrical meters, pressure reading devices, and temperature gauges.

  • Expertise in plastics injection molding, plastic injection, plastic molding, or similar plastic production environments.

  • Strong troubleshooting skills for mechanical and tooling-related problems.

  • Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high-quality standards in tooling and finished parts.

Work Environment

This role is based in a manufacturing facility with active production lines and moving mechanical parts. The noise level on the production floor is above 85 dB, and hearing protection must be worn at all times in that area. Employees may be occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles. Temperatures can vary significantly, with winter conditions as low as 50°F and summer conditions exceeding 100°F. The position requires wearing jeans or work pants, work shirts, hearing protection, and steel-toe boots as standard attire. The environment is hands-on and fast-paced, with frequent interaction with production, maintenance, and quality teams and regular work on and around injection molding machines, metal stamping tools, and other traditional machine shop equipment.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Collierville, TN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $35.00/hr.
