Description

SUMMARY:The Animal Care Attendant is responsible for the overall care of all the animals within the shelter. The responsibilities will vary based on the needs of the shelter. This is a part-time position which requires weekend and holiday shifts. Under general supervision, performs animal care tasks and shelter upkeep to maintain a clean and disease-free environment for impounded animals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Adheres to the cleaning procedures set forth by the shelter manager for animal care, feeding, kennel maintenance, sanitation, parasite and disease control, and other animal care practices as instructed.

Responsible for maintaining the animal housing areas and the shelter as a whole in a clean and sanitary condition. This includes cleaning and disinfecting, and maintenance.

Fresh water must be available and easily accessible to each animal at all times.

Must maintain a humane and caring attitude at all times towards the animals in their care. Caretakers must be knowledgeable about proper handling and restraint of animals. Teasing, neglect or any instances of animal cruelty WILL NOT be tolerated and will result in immediate dismissal.

Responsible for careful observation of animals in runs and cages, to see that the animals are safe, healthy, and comfortable.

Each animal should have access to clean and dry bedding.

Responsible to promptly notify Shelter Manager if any animal shows signs of stress, injury or illness.

Performs other duties as assigned. There is never a time at an animal shelter when all the work is done and the animals have been given enough attention.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

LANGUAGE SKILLS:Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions. Ability to effectively present information one-on-one and in small group situations to the general public and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:Ability to count, add, subtract, multiply and divide.

REASONING ABILITY:Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.

FINANCIAL ACCOUNTABILITY:Employee is not responsible for making purchases.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:Must possess a drivers license.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:Experience in handling of animals is preferred. Knowledge of animal breeds and behaviors helpful.

PHYSICAL DEMANDSThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Often requires lifting and carrying materials or animals weighing 40 - 60lbs. Additionally, handle dogs weighing up to 150 lbs. Walking and/or standing for long periods, crouching, crawling or frequently working in a bent or stooped position. May be required to use strength or agility in capturing and restraining stronger, more active animals.

WORK ENVIRONMENTThe wor k environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. This position has periodic to frequent disagreeable working conditions including performing duties in the rain or wind, and with the danger of being bitten by animals. Some tasks require exposure to dust, pollen, cleaning solutions and animal hair. There also will be exposure to blood, feces, urine and saliva in this working environment. Employee is strongly encouraged to participate in the City\'s rabies vaccine program at the City\'s expense. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. :::
