Registered Nurse (RN) – Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

Qualifications

  • Current license from the Ohio Board of Nursing or a current multi‑state license from a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state

  • Minimum of two (2) years of direct patient care experience within the last three (3) years

  • Graduation from a professional nursing program approved by the appropriate state‑accrediting agency and accredited at the time of completion by one of the following:

  • Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN)

  • Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)

  • Current AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

  • Current AHA Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification

  • Current Continuing Medical Education (CME) / Continuing Education Units (CEU) as required

  • Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) experience is preferred but not required

  • Specialty certification (e.g., CCRN) is preferred but not required

Intensive Care Unit Overview

The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a specialized hospital unit that provides critical care and life‑support services for patients experiencing severe, life‑threatening injuries or illnesses. The ICU is equipped with advanced medical technology and staffed by a highly skilled multidisciplinary team that delivers continuous, 24/7 monitoring and treatment .

ICU Registered Nurses provide direct, comprehensive care for critically ill patients by continuously monitoring hemodynamic status, managing complex life‑support equipment, and administering high‑risk medications and therapies. ICU RNs perform ongoing assessments, develop and implement individualized plans of care in collaboration with physicians and other healthcare professionals, and deliver education and emotional support to patients and their families. ICU RNs maintain accurate clinical documentation and respond rapidly and effectively to medical emergencies.

Registered Nurse Responsibilities

  • Perform continuous and comprehensive assessments of critically ill patients

  • Monitor and interpret vital signs, hemodynamic data, and cardiac rhythms

  • Administer medications, blood products, and advanced IV therapies

  • Manage ventilators, invasive lines, and other life‑support equipment

  • Implement and evaluate individualized nursing care plans

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to coordinate complex patient care

  • Provide patient and family education, emotional support, and end‑of‑life care when appropriate

  • Maintain detailed and accurate electronic medical record documentation

  • Respond promptly to medical emergencies and changes in patient condition

ICU Unit Assignments

Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU)

  • 12‑bed surgical critical care unit

  • Provides care for patients following complex surgical procedures including:

  • Coronary artery bypass grafts (CABG)

  • Aortic and mitral valve repairs (AVR, MVR)

  • Left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) for home therapy

  • Cardiac and vascular aneurysm repairs

  • Vascular bypass surgeries and stent placements

  • Major abdominal, ENT, and complex thoracic surgeries

  • Admits surgical patients who become unstable intra‑operatively or post‑operatively, including admissions directly from the operating room, from home, or from any inpatient unit

  • Patients are managed by a multidisciplinary team with 24/7 intensivist coverage, two nurse practitioners, and a dedicated respiratory therapist

  • Specialized advanced therapies include:

  • Intra‑aortic balloon pump (IABP)

  • Impella device

  • Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT)

  • Therapeutic hypothermia

  • Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)

  • HeartMate II and III ventricular assist devices

  • Advanced continuous cardiac monitoring via HemoSphere

Medical Intensive Care Unit / Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (MICU/CICU)

  • 16‑bed acute care intensive care unit with step‑down capability

  • Covered by Pulmonary and Cardiology services

  • Cares for patients with complex medical and cardiac conditions including:

  • Acute heart failure

  • Acute myocardial infarction

  • Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)

  • Acute stroke

  • Pneumonia

  • Acute respiratory failure

  • Gastrointestinal bleeding

  • Advanced therapies provided by specially trained staff include:

  • Intra‑aortic balloon pump (IABP)

  • Impella

  • Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT)

  • Therapeutic hypothermia

  • Left ventricular assist devices (LVAD)

  • High‑flow oxygen therapy, BIPAP, and mechanical ventilation

  • Patients are managed by a multidisciplinary team including 24‑hour cardiology and pulmonology coverage, one nurse practitioner, and a dedicated respiratory therapist
