Insight Global Microsoft SQL Server Engineer in Cincinnati, Ohio
Job Description
The Technical Services department, responsible for supporting the server infrastructure at Cincinnati, is seeking 1 Microsoft SQL Server engineer to assist with planning and implementing a safe, supportable, and cost‑effective upgrade of the Microsoft SQL Server environment to a target version that meets performance, security, resiliency, and compliance requirements.
Inventory and assess current SQL Server deployments (on‑prem, VMs, cloud IaaS/PaaS).
Define the target state architecture (version/edition, HA/DR, security, capacity).
Produce a detailed, low‑risk upgrade/migration plan with timelines, testing requirements and roll‑back processes as appropriate.
Develop effort estimates, licensing impacts, and a phased implementation roadmap.
We currently have 14 SQL Servers
} SQL 2014 – 3 installations
} SQL 2016 – 6 installations
} SQL 2019 – 5 installations
Partner with infrastructure and application development engineers to ensure successful upgrades

Skills and Requirements
7+ years of hands‑on Microsoft SQL Server experience, supporting and upgrading mixed‑version environments (SQL 2014, 2016, 2019)
Proven experience planning and executing low‑risk SQL Server upgrades, including version compatibility, testing, rollback, and repeatable processes
Strong architecture and assessment skills — able to inventory environments and recommend a supportable target state (version, HA/DR, security, capacity)
Experience partnering closely with software engineers and infrastructure teams to safely upgrade production systems
Strong communication and advisory skills, with the ability to remain calm, present clearly to technical and business users, and avoid operational risk in a regulated environment
