Position Summary:

Safety is the most important part of all jobs at Nucor. The Controls Engineer III is an advanced, independent technical leader responsible for the design, implementation, standardization, and long-term reliability of industrial automation and electrical control systems across Raw Materials Recycling Group facilities. This role sets the technical example, mentors developing engineers, and influences engineering standards, safety practices, and system-level decisions.

Basic Job Functions:

  • Demonstrate safety leadership through proactive hazard identification and engineered solutions.

  • Lead PLC and HMI programming using Rockwell Automation platforms including Studio 5000 andFactoryTalk View.

  • Design, review, and commission industrial control systems and automation architectures.

  • Lead control panel design efforts including layouts, component selection, wiring, and codecompliance (NEC, UL508A, NFPA 70E).

  • Serve as the lead controls engineer on capital and operational improvement projects.

  • Design and troubleshoot industrial OT networks using Ethernet/IP, DeviceNet, and Modbus.

  • Provide advanced troubleshooting and root-cause analysis for complex automation issues. Mentor Controls Engineers III, co-ops, and interns. Influence and help define division-level automation and electrical standards.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical, Industrial, or related Engineering discipline.

  • Minimum 5+ years of progressive industrial automation and controls experience.

  • Advanced proficiency with Rockwell Automation platforms (PLC, HMI, VFDs).

  • Advanced proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical.

  • Experience with low- and medium-voltage motor control and power distribution systems.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to travel approximately 35% to support RMG facilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in heavy industrial, recycling, mining, or metals environments.

  • Advanced knowledge of NFPA 70E and electrical safety programs.

  • Industrial OT networking architecture experience.

  • Certified Automation Professional (CAP) or equivalent.
