The Opportunity

As the the Vector Control Coordinator, you will be responsible for planning, coordinating and supervising vector control interventions within assigned districts in Eastern Province. You will ensure successful implementation of Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) and Insecticide-Treated Nets (ITN) distribution and monitoring activities. Working closely with District and Provincial Health Offices, the Vector Control Coordinator will play a central role in strengthening malaria prevention aimed at reducing vector-borne disease transmission. The Vector Control Coordinator will report to the Project Vector Control Manager.

Project Description

The U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) Evolve Project, awarded to Abt Global in December 2022, supports national malaria programs with the planning, implementation, and monitoring of vector control interventions, including insecticide-treated nets (ITNs), indoor residual spraying (IRS), and essential entomological monitoring required to make vector control decisions.

Core Responsibilities

A. Planning and coordination

  • Collaborate with District and Provincial Health Office in Eastern Province to execute IRS and ITN activities supported through the project.

  • Assist the Project Vector Control Manager to develop annual and seasonal IRS and ITN workplans.

  • Participate in microplanning, target setting, resource forecasting and logistical planning for vector control activities.

  • Coordinate with partners and other stakeholders to ensure smooth implementation of interventions.

B. Implementation oversight

  • Supervise and monitor all aspects of IRS campaigns, including recruitment and training of seasonal staff.

  • Orient and supervise temporary district coordinators during the peak period of IRS planning and implementation.

  • Oversee safe handling, storage, transportation, and disposal of insecticides and related materials.

  • Ensure that IRS operations adhere to national guidelines, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and international safety standards.

  • Monitor spray quality, operator performance and environmental compliance through regular field supervision.

  • Coordinate ITN distribution activities (mass campaigns, routine distribution through health facilities, schools, and community channels).

  • Ensure proper documentation of ITN distribution, household coverage and usage data.

  • Verify that ITN distribution follows established targeting criteria and accountability systems.

  • Conduct spot-checks, data verification and performance assessments to maintain high-quality interventions.

C. Data management and reporting

  • Collect, review, and validate IRS and ITN implementation data from the field and/or Health facility.

  • Support the use of digital data collection tools.

  • Analyze coverage trends, identify challenges and propose corrective actions.

Minimum requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in public health, Environmental Health or a related field.

What we Value

  • At least 2–3 years of experience in public health, disease surveillance or malaria control

  • Practical experience in implementing or supervising IRS and/or ITN distribution activities preferred

  • Knowledge of Community based IRS delivery model

  • Experience working with local health systems and partners at district or provincial levels

  • Training in vector control, malaria prevention, or insecticide management is an added advantage

  • Knowledge of the Zambian health system is an added advantage
