Hargrove Engineers & Constructors Senior High Voltage Electrical Engineer in Chicago, Illinois
Job Summary
Hargrove is currently hiring a licensed Professional Electrical Engineer (PE) with deep experience in high-voltage substation systems to join our growing team. This role focuses on the physical design, analysis, and execution of electrical substations up to 345kV, supporting projects from conceptual planning through construction and commissioning. The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise, leadership capability, and a commitment to quality, safety, and mentoring junior engineers.
Key Responsibilities
Perform physical design of electrical substations in accordance with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements, including:
General arrangement drawings
Equipment, electrical, and control building layouts
Elevation views
Cable trench design
Equipment grounding and ground grids
Lightning protection systems
Conduit and cable tray drawings
AC and DC power systems
Area lighting systems
Bills of Materials
Perform electrical calculations, studies, and analysis, including:
Touch and step voltage analysis
Substation grounding calculations
Pre- and post-energization harmonic studies
Short circuit studies
Mechanical force calculations on bus bars due to fault currents
Load flow and reactive power flow analysis
Harmonic filter analysis
NERC compliance analysis
Protective relay coordination
Transient analysis
Slack-span calculations for transmission line spans
Corona performance studies
Develop equipment and material specifications for outdoor switchyard equipment with operating voltages up to 345kV
Create procurement specifications and design scopes for engineered electrical equipment, including:
Vacuum and SF₆ circuit breakers
Motor-operated and gang-operated manual switches
Potential transformers (PTs) and current transformers (CTs)
Station service transformers
Insulators and surge arresters
Station service battery systems
Review, integrate, and manage vendor drawings and technical data
Coordinate with vendors to ensure timely and quality delivery of drawings, materials, and equipment per project schedules
Complete conceptual and preliminary designs for planning and estimating purposes
Prepare supporting documentation for procurement, construction, and operations/maintenance activities
Participate in and/or lead client meetings and job site visits to gather and communicate engineering data
Follow Hargrove’s QA/QC program to ensure compliance across all design packages
Mentor and support the development of less experienced engineers and designers in substation design
Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering
Professional Engineer (PE) license required
Minimum of 10 years of experience in substation physical design
Proven experience with high-voltage systems up to 345kV
Strong document management, organization, and quality control skills
Exceptional attention to detail
Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Software Experience
Candidates should have working knowledge of, or experience with, the following tools:
AutoCAD and/or AutoCAD Electrical
Bentley MicroStation
ETAP, SKM PowerTools, or ASPEN OneLiner
CYMCAP
PLS-CADD (or similar transmission line analysis software)
Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit, stand, or walk for long periods of time.
