CDM Smith currently has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Environmental Specialist with previous experience managing environmental management systems (EMS) for local and state transportation departments to join and help lead our growing Illinois Transportation group. In this position, you will act as a technical and regulatory expert supporting environmental management systems (EMS) for transportation-related operations.
The specialist will act as the EMS Lead (Process Owner) and support statewide efforts to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations. This position requires extensive environmental compliance experience, strong communication skills, and the ability to collaborate with transportation agencies, district offices, and facility staff.
As a Senior Environmental Specialist, you will serve our clients and deliver on exciting opportunities by:
•Serve as the Lead for an EMS program team, guiding program implementation and continuous improvement.
•Act as the technical and regulatory expert for environmental compliance topics, including policy development, maintenance of procedures, best management practices (BMPs), and compliance strategies.
•Assist with spill response, waste management, regulated substances investigations, and corrective action planning.
•Improve compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations.
•Prepare and maintain environmental documentation and reports.
•Track program metrics, monitor performance, and report progress to leadership.
•Develop and conduct training programs at and for facilities.
•Conduct facility inspections and work with facilities to resolve non-compliance findings.
•Mentor junior staff and help expand organizational environmental compliance capabilities.
•Implement CDM Smith’s quality procedures throughout the project lifecycle.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Science or related discipline. Registration as a licensed Professional Geologist, as certified by ASBOG. 12 years of related experience. Domestic and/or international travel may be required. The frequency of travel is contingent on specific duties, responsibilities, and the essential functions of the position, which may vary depending on workload and project demands. Equivalent additional directly related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
Preferred Qualifications:
•OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER training certificate and 8-Hour Refresher training certificates per 29 CFR 1910.120
•Illinois Licensed Professional Engineer or Illinois Licensed Professional Geologist.
•Previous experience conducting environmental compliance assessments (ECAs) and preparing the associated ECA reports.
•Detailed knowledge of United States and Illinois environmental compliance regulations, as demonstrated by education, training and/or specific experience.
•Strong experience meeting and working with Illinois agencies, cities, and municipalities.
•Experience with EMS program management, regulated substances investigations, transportation project development and construction, and detailed knowledge of United States and Illinois environmental compliance regulations, as demonstrated by education, training and/or specific experience.

Pay Range Minimum:
$110,240
Pay Range Maximum:
$192,899
Additional Compensation:
All bonuses at CDM Smith are discretionary and may or may not apply to this position.
Work Location Options:
