Job overview and responsibilities
The Global Procurement organization at United Airlines is responsible for procuring goods and services and developing/managing relationships with third-party providers with the objective of reducing total cost and risk to the company while improving levels of quality, service, and technology.
The Contract Manager operates within a dual procurement model: Contact Management is responsible for drafting, negotiating, and managing non-commercial terms while the Sourcing Manager owns the commercial terms. The Contract Manager partners closely with Sourcing to align commercial and non-commercial outcomes, ensures contractual obligations are operationally executable and escalates commercial-legal tradeoffs when joint decisions are required. This is a Chicago-based, hybrid position and will require 3 days in office weekly.
Oversee the reading and negotiating of procurement contracts, including oversight of the drafting, review, and revision process across the enterprise, to meet company objectives and legal requirements
Work with business teams to establish appropriate timelines
Communicate and resolve procurement-related issues including delays, discrepancies, or contract concerns
Translate legal risk into operational terms for internal business stakeholders; propose pragmatic, business-aligned contract language and fallback positions within the approved framework
Identify and escalate non-commercial risks; design mitigation strategies and standard clauses to reduce exposure
Develop collaborative relationships with key internal stakeholders (i.e., Division Leads, Operational Field Team, Legal, IT Security, Tax and Risk Management) and participate in Supplier negotiations
Manage contract lifecycle from intake through signature, implementation, amendments, renewals and closeout; maintain accurate contract records and templates
Manage and/or mentor team, provide guidance and valuable input on all mentioned responsibilities
Train and develop individuals and all team members on spend data analysis and relevant tools
Provide support, partnership and direction to team members
Qualifications
What’s needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):
Bachelor's degree in Legal, Supply Chain, or another business-related field
Legal and Regulatory Acumen
3+ years of experience in Procurement, Sourcing, Supply Chain, Legal Analysis, and/or Legal Operations
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
Extensive planning and project management proficiency
Demonstrated experience working with legal contracts
Strong internal and external negotiation and influencing skills; demonstrated ability to make tough decisions
Ability to build strong and effective working relationships with internal business partners and suppliers
Ability to convert complex clauses into actionable terms
Ability to interpret legal obligations in business context
Ability to travel up to 10%
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship
Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification
Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
What will help you propel from the pack (Preferred Qualifications):
Master's degree and/or Juris Doctor (JD)
Successful, multi-year track record in Procurement - Legal Operations
Paralegal experience
Knowledge of Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) concepts and strategic procurement process
Experience with Coupa or other Procurement/Spend Management platforms
Ability to act as a change agent who seeks out and advocates for new and innovative solutions to meet business needs
Analytical & research skills
Knowledge and application of contract law and compliance frameworks
The base pay range for this role is $102,220.00 to $133,194.00.
The base salary range/hourly rate listed is dependent on job-related, factors such as experience, education, and skills. This position is also eligible for bonus and/or long-term incentive compensation awards.
