Chewelah School District Paraeducator in Chewelah, Washington

PARAEDUCATOR UP TO 6.75 HOURS PER SCHOOL DAY

*REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  *

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Competent in communication and written language skills
  • Able to work cooperatively with students, parents, teachers and administrators
  • Able to model skills important to student learning and social development
  • Competent in working with materials and equipment in the educational environment
  • Must have good common sense and apply good judgement in working with others
  • Able to lift and transfer student
  • Able to lift 50 pounds and carry for a distance of 25 feet
  • Alternatives to the above qualifications may be substituted as determined acceptable and appropriate by the Superintendent

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

  • Washington State Patrol check and FBI clearance
  • One of the following Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB) paraeducator employment requirements:
    • Qualifying score on the Education Testing Service (ETS) paraeducator assessment (administered by the district after hired);
    • Associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university;
    • 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at the 100 level or higher at an accredited college or university; or
    • Completed apprenticeship as a paraeducator, in a program registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council
  • First Aid/CPR certification or ability to become certified

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least 2 years of study at an institution of higher education or an Associate of Arts Degree or higher degree.
  • Experience as a school para-educator
  • College training in the areas of education and child development
  • Experience supervising and educating young people.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Works with individual students or groups of students under the direction of staff.
  2. Operates and cares for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes.
  3. Is responsible and punctual, on-site as assigned at all times.
  4. Is an appropriate role model.
  5. Disciplines students in accordance with Disciplinary Guidelines.
  6. Participates in staff meetings and in-service, when requested.
  7. Reports behavior problems and accidents promptly.
  8. Employs standard first-aid techniques in responding to an accident.
  9. Performs student supervision as assigned.
  10. Refers parent, community concerns about school activities including student progress and behavior to the building principal.
  11. Keeps accurate data and completes reports as assigned.
  12. Attends to hygiene needs of students when necessary.
  13. Maintains confidentiality.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned by principal.

GENERAL BENEFITS: Employees anticipated to work at least 630 hours per school year (September 1 -- August 31) and their families are eligible to be covered by medical, dental, vision, basic life, and long-term disability insurance through the School Employees Benefit Board (SEBB). Employees participate in a Washington State retirement plan and may choose to enroll in the District's 403b and deferred compensation plans. 180 day per year employees receive ten (10) paid sick days based on their hours worked per day. Up to 50% of the sick days are designated for emergency, personal and certain bereavement. Other paid leaves available to those who qualify include bereavement, military, and jury duty or subpoena. Benefits may be prorated depending upon employment start date.
