Kayem Foods, Inc. Environmental, Health & Safety Manager in Chelsea, Massachusetts

SUMMARY:

Kayem’s Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Manager is responsible for leading and overseeing all environmental, health, and safety programs across Kayem food manufacturing and distribution operations. This role ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations while promoting a proactive safety culture that supports operational excellence, food safety, and continuous improvement.

Essential Functions, Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive EHS programs aligned with Kayem Foods policies and regulatory requirements.

  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, MassDEP, local and State regulatory standards applicable to food manufacturing operations.

  • Serve as the primary contact for regulatory agencies and lead all inspections, audits, and corrective action responses.

  • Lead safety programs including LOTO, confined space, machine guarding, ergonomics, powered industrial trucks, and contractor safety.

  • Conduct incident investigations, root cause analysis, and oversee corrective and preventive actions.

  • Utilizing Alchemy, develop EHS training programs for all levels of the organization.

  • Partners with Operations, Maintenance, Sanitation, and QA to drive a strong safety and food safety culture.

  • Track and analyze safety and environmental performance metrics and report trends to leadership.

  • Support GFSI, customer, and regulatory audits as they relate to EHS programs.

  • Assist / support emergency response planning, spill response, and crisis management activities.

  • Promote and sustain continuous improvement initiatives related to safety and environmental performance.

  • Acts as senior EHS subject matter expert and mentor to site leadership.

  • Maintain all Safety related & BRC documentation and document control.

  • Other duties or special projects as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong working knowledge of food manufacturing, safety, and environmental requirements.

  • Working knowledge of Massachusetts environmental and occupational safety regulations.

  • Ability to lead cross-functional teams and influence behavior at all organizational levels.

  • Strong incident investigation, risk assessment, and critical thinking skills.

  • High sense of urgency with the ability to manage competing priorities.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and digital reporting systems.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or related discipline required.

  • Minimum of 8 years progressive EHS experience, preferably within food manufacturing or processing environments.

  • Experience working in USDA and/or FDA regulated facilities.

  • Professional certifications such as CSP, ASP, CIH, or CHMM preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

Work is performed in both an office setting with standard equipment such as computers, and phones where the noise level is generally quiet to moderately loud and in storage areas and the manufacturing plant and is exposed to refrigerated (35-40 degrees) and wet conditions. The noise level in the plant is usually loud.

Pay Range

The base pay range for this role is $80,000-$110,000 annually.

The listed salary range represents Kayem Foods’ good faith estimate for this position and represents the minimum and maximum for new hire pay ranges.

Ranges are reviewed on a regular basis. An employee’s rate of pay within the range is determined by their qualifications, relevant experience, and demonstrated performance over time. In addition to those factors, we believe in the importance of pay equity and consider internal equity of our current team members as a part of any final offer. Hiring at the maximum of the range would not be typical to allow for future and continued wage growth. This position is eligible for our comprehensive benefits package and is eligible for an annual wage review. Kayem Foods complies with all federal, state, and local minimum wage laws.
