Robert Half Category Manager in Charlotte, North Carolina
Description
A large, high‑growth North American retail organization with a significant physical footprint is building a new U.S.-based procurement function as part of a long‑term, enterprise‑wide Procure‑to‑Pay (P2P) transformation. This is a rare opportunity to help build procurement strategy and infrastructure from the ground up while managing complex, high‑value indirect spend categories.
This role will serve as a foundational hire within the U.S. procurement organization and offers high visibility, autonomy, and long‑term growth potential—without immediate people management.
Why This Role Is Unique
Newly created role as part of a global procurement transformation
Opportunity to help stand up U.S. procurement strategy, governance, and processes
Exposure to multi‑billion‑dollar indirect spend across North America
Partner closely with global stakeholders and external BPO providers
Strong runway for career growth as the team scales
No direct reports (for now) — high impact without people management
The Role
The Senior Procurement Category Manager will lead U.S. indirect procurement efforts across a broad and operationally critical set of categories, including (but not limited to):
Fuel & Terminals
Fleet
Maintenance & Services
Equipment & Supplies
Logistics & Operations Support
This person will play a key role in establishing procurement processes, supplier strategies, contract frameworks, and category governance, while partnering with both internal stakeholders and external technology/BPO teams.
Key Responsibilities
Build and execute category strategies across complex indirect spend areas
Negotiate and establish new supplier contracts, rates, and commercial terms
Analyze current spend, suppliers, and contracts to identify optimization opportunities
Implement policies, procedures, and sourcing frameworks
Partner with an external BPO supporting procurement systems and technology
Drive supplier rationalization, contract compliance, and performance management
Work cross‑functionally with operations, facilities, finance, and leadership
Support change management tied to new tools, processes, and ways of working
Use modern procurement tools, data, and emerging technologies (including AI) to improve efficiency and insights
Requirements
Must‑Have Qualifications
5+ years of procurement experience, with strong exposure to indirect spend
Demonstrated strength in contract negotiation and supplier management
Experience in retail, brick‑and‑mortar, facilities, property, or operations‑heavy environments
Proven ability to operate independently and build structure where little exists
Comfortable in fast‑paced, transformational environments
Self‑starter with a high level of energy, curiosity, and ownership
