Facilities Maintenance Technician (Plumbing Preferred)
Location: Downtown Charleston, SC – Multiple Hospital Facilities (Zone East)
Employment Type: Contract‑to‑Hire
Shift Options:
1st Shift: 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM (Sunday–Thursday)
2nd Shift: 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM (Monday–Friday)
$1.50/hr shift differential for 2nd shift
Additional weekend differential for Sunday shifts
Pay Range: $24–$26/hr (based on experience; certifications/schooling may increase rate)
Position Overview
MUSC is seeking Facilities Maintenance Technicians to support hospital and clinical facilities across Downtown Charleston. This role focuses heavily on commercial plumbing maintenance while also supporting general building maintenance needs. The ideal candidate is a jack‑of‑all‑trades with strong problem‑solving skills who is comfortable working in an active healthcare environment.
Plumbing experience is strongly preferred , but candidates from general maintenance, apartment maintenance, or handyman backgrounds who are trainable and willing to learn are encouraged to apply.
Key Responsibilities
Perform routine and corrective plumbing maintenance , including:
Clearing toilet clogs and drain stoppages
Repairing and replacing commercial plumbing fixtures (flush valves, faucets, toilets, sinks)
Complete general facilities maintenance tasks such as:
Installing wall fasteners, dry‑erase boards, and mounted equipment
Repairing or replacing door hardware
Hanging and securing fixtures throughout hospital units
Respond to maintenance work orders across assigned hospital zones
Troubleshoot issues and apply practical problem‑solving skills
Support major storm events as needed (no routine on‑call rotation)
Maintain a safe, clean, and compliant work environment within clinical spaces
Required & Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Experience:
Hospital or healthcare facilities maintenance
Commercial plumbing maintenance (malls, large buildings, campuses, hospitals)
Also Considered:
Residential or apartment maintenance technicians
Handymen with broad trade exposure
Candidates without plumbing backgrounds who are eager to learn
Skills & Traits:
Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills
Coachable, dependable, and willing to cross‑train
Comfortable working independently and as part of a team
Ability to adapt in a fast‑paced hospital environment
Education/Certifications:
Trade school, technical certifications, or relevant coursework preferred
Certifications may positively impact pay rate
Additional Details
No on‑call rotation required

Opportunity to convert to full time staff after contract period

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $26.00 - $28.00/hr.
