Summary:
The Mgr Finance SOM for the Department of Surgery plays a crucial role in managing and optimizing the financial operations of its assigned School of Medicine departments. This position oversees a team of budget analysts who perform a variety of financial management activities. This position ensures
the alignment of financial practices with the goals and objectives of the department, Faculty Practice, and the School of Medicine as a whole, making recommendations to senior leadership when appropriate. This position supports School of Medicine departments of high complexity with 200+ teammates and more than $75M in revenue.
Responsibilities:
Budget Planning & Development and Management: Leads a team of budget analysts in the preparation and development of the department’s budget, ensuring alignment with strategic priorities. Works across multiple divisions and managers to develop individual service line budgets.
Budget and Forecast Management: Manages all funds budget forecasts, providing insights and recommendations for financial adjustments. Provides ongoing analysis of the department’s available funds and makes recommendations on distribution and possible use.
Oversight of Financial Reports & Variance Analysis: Analyzes complex financial reports, identifying variances and providing actionable insights to stakeholders and guiding lower-level staff on the best action to take when variances are found.
Oversight of Year-End Activity/Month-End Activity: Develops and implements all fund accounting processes, ensuring accurate and timely completion of year-end and month-end activities. Develops timelines and processes to improve and increase efficiency of financial activities.
Proformas: Analyzes proforma financial statements to make recommendations on departmental planning and decision-making.
Accountability to ACA, FP, and Academic Finance: Serves as the primary financial liaison, ensuring accountability and transparency in financial operations
Oversee/Indirect Reporting Research Admin (Post Award): Oversees post-award financial administration, ensuring financial transactions are completed and compliance with research funding requirements.
Oversee Commitments: Monitors financial commitments, working with departmental leadership to ensure alignment with departmental objectives.
Departmental Funds Reporting: Oversees team of analysts in the preparation and presentation of financial reports on departmental funds. Works with senior leadership to provide explanation and recommendations for financial health and resource allocation.
Human Resources Management: Supervises a team of budget analysts. Responsible for hiring, firing, mentoring, and all day-to-day supervision and support. Provides guidance and oversight to the team, ensuring compliance and accuracy in financial reporting.
Other Information
Education Requirements:
● Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance or related field or equivalent. Master’s degree preferred.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
● None required.
Professional Experience Requirements:
● Requires seven (7) years of progressive experience in budgeting/finance.
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:
● Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills.
● Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
● Must be adept at presenting complex financial information in an effective manner that allows others to make sound business decisions.
● Ability to supervise and manage others.
