Low Voltage Technician I - Pay: $22-24/hr
Job Description
The Low Voltage Technician I joins a technical team to install, terminate, and test structured cabling and low-voltage systems in commercial construction environments. This entry-level role is ideal for someone with up to one year of experience who has strong mechanical aptitude, basic construction knowledge, and a willingness to learn and grow into more advanced technician and leadership positions.
Responsibilities
Install work area outlets for floor monuments, modular furniture (such as surface mount boxes), and wall locations using appropriate hardware and methods.
Drop cable down walls using fish tape or other approved methods, and route cable cleanly and efficiently through modular furniture and building structures.
Perform pre-termination procedures, including organizing, forming, and dressing cables; determining proper cable length and slack; and labeling cables accurately.
Suspend and support cable correctly using cable trays, J-hooks, D-rings, bridal rings, and trapeze supports in accordance with industry standards and site requirements.
Build and organize telecommunications closets by mounting and installing backboards, cross-connects, racks, patch panels, fiber optic components, and related hardware.
Install grounding for racks, equipment, and cabling as required to meet safety and performance standards.
Perform fire-stopping procedures on fire-rated walls, including installing sleeves, pulling cable through sleeves and core penetrations, and properly sealing penetrations.
Terminate low-voltage devices and structured cabling, including copper and fiber optic terminations, following manufacturer specifications and best practices.
Follow construction drawings, prints, and documentation to complete installations accurately and according to project design.
Assist with pulling fiber and copper cabling, including Cat 5, Cat 6, and fiber optic cable, ensuring proper handling and bend radius.
Conduct basic termination testing as directed to verify cable performance and document results when required.
Complete all required paperwork accurately and on time, including timesheets, material transfers, work orders, change orders, tool transfers, and other project documentation.
Work collaboratively with other technicians and site personnel to meet project schedules and quality standards while maintaining a safe work environment.
Essential Skills
Zero (0) to one (1) year of experience in electrical or low-voltage/structured cabling work.
Mechanical aptitude with the ability and willingness to learn new tools, techniques, and systems.
Basic knowledge of the construction industry and construction site practices.
Ability to install and route structured cabling, including Cat 5 and Cat 6 copper cabling.
Ability to pull and assist with installation of fiber optic cabling.
Skill in terminating low-voltage devices and structured cabling under supervision.
Ability to perform basic termination testing on low-voltage cabling as directed.
Experience or familiarity with cable support systems such as cable trays, J-hooks, D-rings, bridal rings, and trapeze supports.
Ability to read and follow construction prints and basic technical diagrams.
Strong attention to detail in organizing, dressing, and labeling cables.
Reliable completion of documentation, including timesheets, work orders, and material or tool transfers.
OSHA 10 certification or willingness to obtain it, demonstrating understanding of job site safety requirements.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Prior experience in the structured cabling industry, even up to one (1) year, is preferred.
Experience working on commercial construction sites or similar environments is beneficial.
Familiarity with building and organizing telecommunications closets, including racks, patch panels, and backboards.
Basic understanding of grounding practices for racks, equipment, and cabling.
Experience performing fire-stopping procedures and working with fire-rated assemblies is a plus.
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work through installation challenges with guidance.
Effective communication skills to work as part of a technical team and interact with other trades on site.
Demonstrated reliability, punctuality, and commitment to completing assigned tasks safely and on schedule.
Interest in long-term career growth within low-voltage, structured cabling, or related technical fields.

Work Environment
This role is based on active construction and project sites, initially starting on a project in Ashburn, VA and transitioning to a project in Manassas, VA after several weeks, so you must be willing to work at both locations. You work primarily on-site in a field environment that involves standing, walking, climbing ladders, and working in and above ceilings, walls, and furniture systems. You handle and install low-voltage cabling systems, including Cat 5, Cat 6, and fiber optic cables, using tools such as fish tape, termination tools, cable testers, and cable support hardware. The schedule typically follows standard construction hours and may require flexibility based on project needs and deadlines. The environment emphasizes safety, including adherence to OSHA 10 guidelines and site-specific safety rules, and expects appropriate job-site attire and personal protective equipment suitable for a construction settin

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $24.00/hr.
