Job Description
The Pharmacy Data Technician accurately enters and processes new and refill prescriptions in a long-term care pharmacy setting, ensuring timely and error-free dispensing for nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and group homes. This role combines high-volume data entry, prescription verification, and customer service while working closely with pharmacy systems and healthcare providers to support safe and efficient medication delivery.
Responsibilities
Enter new and refill prescriptions into the pharmacy operating system accurately and in a timely manner to prevent dispensing errors.
Triage and prioritize incoming fax prescriptions to support prompt and efficient dispensing.
Record clear and accurate notes in the computer system, including appropriate cycle fill coding.
Calculate and/or verify correct medication dosages based on prescription information.
Respond to incoming customer calls with care, understanding, and courtesy, routing calls appropriately to ensure high-quality service.
Ensure all prescriptions assigned for processing during the shift are completed within that regular shift.
Receive, evaluate, and process refill requests, and follow up with doctors’ offices as needed to obtain authorization or clarification.
Develop proficiency in all pharmacy systems, including document imaging and the legacy pharmacy computer operating system.
Assist, as needed, with filing completed orders, packaging medications, managing inventory, profiling orders for medical records, and filling processed prescriptions for dispensing.
Learn and maintain the pharmacy’s cycle fill processes to meet delivery deadlines for long-term care facilities.
Maintain accurate data entry records for cycle medications, fill requests, and cycle medication orders needing renewal, in addition to new cycle orders when applicable.
Collaborate with pharmacy staff to support efficient workflow and adherence to regulatory and safety standards.
Perform other essential functions and duties as assigned to support overall pharmacy operations.
Essential Skills
Active Pharmacy Technician certification (such as CPhT).
1–3+ years of experience working as a pharmacy technician in a pharmacy setting.
Proficiency in high-volume, accurate data entry for prescriptions and medical information.
Ability to calculate and verify medication dosages based on prescription details.
Experience working with pharmacy computer systems and related technologies.
Strong attention to detail to minimize errors in prescription processing and documentation.
Effective communication skills for interacting with customers, pharmacists, and doctors’ offices.
Ability to prioritize and manage multiple prescription tasks to meet deadlines.
Customer service orientation with a caring, courteous, and professional phone manner.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Cedar Rapids, IA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $22.00/hr.
