GIS Utility Mapping Technician
Job Description
This role focuses on ensuring the accuracy and cartographic quality of utility facility and land base maps through detailed visual and computer-based quality control, data maintenance, and conversion of source documents into automated mapping systems. The GIS Utility Mapping Technician supports utility engineering activities by updating maps and related databases, reconciling field and system data, and producing reliable map products for field and operational use.
Responsibilities
Perform visual and computer-based quality control checks on facility and land base data to ensure accuracy and completeness.
Use editor tools to make corrections, close and map backlog work orders, and ensure that map products reflect correct geographic locations of facilities.
Ensure all map products meet established standards of cartographic quality.
Plot and produce maps for use in field locations and operational activities.
During conversion and post-conversion processes, compare source documents to products and information received from conversion vendors or field offices.
Use quality assurance and quality control tools and editor applications to enter data, reconcile errors, verify the validity of information, and assign attribute information as appropriate.
Assign phasing notation to map products using switch diagrams, material information, and other details provided on source documents.
Convert post-conversion source document details into automated area maps and related databases using editor tools.
Update maps and databases from work orders and work requests, including installation and removal of poles, gas and water mains, and other units of property, as well as bills of sale and shared use information.
Maintain switch diagrams and maps using information from material tickets, Construction Management System (CMS) work orders, Work Management System (WMS) work requests, map sketches, and related documentation.
Perform data entry functions related to cleanup and ongoing maintenance of utility facility data, and as needed, land base data.
Check maps against field data and revise data as changes occur to keep records current and accurate.
Correct permanent location numbers and other key identifiers as needed to maintain data integrity.
Collaborate with field personnel to support a timely and accurate work request and as-built closing process.
Maintain wall maps and related materials used for switching operations, ensuring they remain current when required.
Operate computer peripheral equipment in accordance with operations documentation and procedures.
Maintain documentation related to conversion and post-conversion equipment and tools.
Perform all work in accordance with established company practices, departmental standards, and quality guidelines.
Carry out other similar, related, or incidental duties as assigned under the direction of a team leader or supervisor.
Essential Skills
At least 4 years of experience working with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) within the utility space.
Successful completion of courses or work experience equivalent to 2 years of technical training in utility engineering beyond high school.
Understanding and knowledge of electric, gas, and land base components and systems.
Familiarity with pole area maps, underground area maps, gas maps, water maps, and switch diagrams.
Ability to use GIS or graphical applications, or the demonstrated ability to learn them.
Proficiency in using computer systems for data entry, mapping, and quality control.
Demonstrated cartographic skills, including attention to spatial accuracy and map presentation quality.
Ability to perform detailed quality assurance and quality control on mapping and facility data.
Capability to interpret and work from work orders, work requests, material tickets, bills of sale, and map sketches.
Ability to collaborate effectively with field personnel and office staff to reconcile data and close as-built work accurately.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience with Esri-based GIS platforms.
Experience with ArcFM for utility mapping and asset management.
Familiarity with ADMS and Maximo or similar corporate information systems.
Background in geography, geospatial data, or related disciplines.
Experience with AutoCAD or similar drafting and mapping tools.
Experience in utility construction environments or utility engineering support.
Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify and resolve data discrepancies.
Ability to organize and maintain documentation related to mapping tools, processes, and conversions.
Work Environment
This position operates in a hybrid work environment that combines office-based GIS and data work with field-related activities. Approximately half of the time involves being onsite for as-built verification and data collection, often in active construction or outdoor utility environments. The role requires comfort working outdoors around utility construction activities as well as working at a computer workstation with GIS software, editor tools, and peripheral equipment in an office setting. Standard safety practices apply in field locations, and the work follows established operational and departmental procedures.

This is a Contract position based out of Cedar Rapids, IA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $28.00/hr.
