Job Title: Automated Machine Builder

Job Description

This role focuses on building and troubleshooting high-speed automated assembly machines, sub-assemblies, and electrical components using engineering blueprints and specifications. You will debug new machines and processes, perform precise machine alignments and final set-ups, and actively participate in the planning and design of high-speed, precision automation equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Build automated assembly machines, sub-assemblies, and electrical components from detailed engineering blueprints and specifications.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical, pneumatic, and control-related issues on automated machinery and sub-assemblies.

  • Debug machines and processes for new automated equipment to ensure reliable and efficient operation.

  • Perform machine alignments and final set-ups to achieve high-speed, precision performance and quality output.

  • Participate in the planning and design of high-speed, precision automation equipment, providing input on mechanical build and assembly considerations.

  • Assemble and debug pneumatic components, indexers, pick-and-place devices, metal forming tooling, punches, and dies.

  • Use manual machine shop tools, including a manual mill, to fabricate, adjust, and refine parts as needed during the build process.

  • Interpret and work from engineering drawings, schematics, and specifications to ensure accurate assembly and alignment.

  • Collaborate with engineering and other technical team members to improve machine performance and resolve build and debug challenges.

  • Support the integration and troubleshooting of control systems, including basic PLC-related diagnostics, as part of the machine build process.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience building automatic assembly equipment, including assembly and debug of pneumatic components, indexers, pick-and-place devices, metal form tooling, punches, and dies.

  • Proven mechanical aptitude with a strong understanding of automated machinery and mechanical systems.

  • Strong math skills with the ability to perform accurate measurements and calculations during machine build and alignment.

  • Ability to read, interpret, and work from engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications.

  • Hands-on experience using basic machine shop tools, including a manual mill, for fabrication and adjustments.

  • Experience with high-speed automated machinery, including assembly, troubleshooting, and final set-up.

  • Ability to troubleshoot and debug mechanical and pneumatic systems on complex automated equipment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Associate's degree, specialized education, or vocational/technical training in a mechanical field or crafts trade is preferred.

  • Experience working with high-speed, precision automation equipment and sub-assemblies.

  • Familiarity with control systems and PLC troubleshooting in the context of automated machinery.

  • Comfort working from and contributing to engineering plans for new machine designs.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to diagnose and correct issues during the build and debug phases.

  • Effective communication and collaboration skills when working with engineers, technicians, and other team members.

Work Environment

The role is based in a dedicated machine-building environment with two primary departments: Machine Build Finishing and Machine Build Prototyping. You will work hands-on with high-speed automated machinery, sub-assemblies, pneumatic systems, and control components, using basic machine shop tools such as a manual mill. The setting emphasizes precision, safety, and collaboration, with close interaction between builders, engineers, and other technical staff throughout the build, debug, and finishing stages of machine development.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Cary, IL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $35.00/hr.
