Job Title: Structural Steel Inspector

Job Description

The Structural Steel Inspector travels to a variety of industrial facilities to inspect structural steel, equipment, and related components for safety and integrity. This role combines hands-on field work with detailed documentation, drawing interpretation, and collaboration with engineers to assess and report on structural conditions. The position involves frequent travel, working at heights, and using basic tools and software to support accurate and thorough inspections.

Responsibilities

  • Travel regularly to industrial job sites across multiple states to perform structural steel inspections.

  • Complete site-specific safety training at each facility to understand hazards related to overhead cranes, stairs, grading, and other structural elements.

  • Obtain and complete daily work permits and all required documentation in accordance with site and company procedures.

  • Inspect structural steel, related structures, and equipment for deficiencies and potential safety concerns.

  • Document inspection findings clearly and accurately, including taking digital photographs to support observations.

  • Use basic hand tools in the field to assist with inspections and verification of conditions.

  • Collaborate closely with engineering teams to review and assess the severity and impact of identified deficiencies.

  • Read and interpret structural and facility drawings to correctly identify, label, and reference the location of observed issues.

  • Review inspection specifications and criteria relevant to the structures being evaluated to ensure compliance with standards.

  • Create clear field sketches that illustrate the locations and relationships of structures or equipment within the facility.

  • Prepare concise and accurate inspection reports that summarize findings, locations, and recommendations.

  • Work safely at heights of up to approximately 150 feet using man lifts and other approved access equipment.

  • Communicate effectively with engineers, architects, and facility personnel to coordinate inspections and discuss findings.

  • Adapt to a fast-paced schedule with frequent travel and changing site conditions while maintaining high-quality work.

Essential Skills

  • At least 2 years of experience as a millwright or facility maintenance mechanic.

  • Ability and willingness to travel approximately 80% or more of the time, including frequent overnight trips across multiple surrounding states.

  • Capability to work at heights up to approximately 150 feet using man lifts and similar equipment.

  • Strong aptitude to learn and be trained into the inspector role, including technical inspection methods and reporting standards.

  • Ability to read and interpret structural and facility drawings accurately.

  • Proficiency in preparing clear, detailed inspection reports.

  • Basic proficiency with AutoCAD or similar software for sketches or documentation support.

  • Ability to use basic hand tools safely and effectively in the field.

  • Strong attention to detail when identifying and documenting structural deficiencies.

  • Effective communication skills to work with engineers, architects, and facility personnel.

  • Comfort working in industrial environments with varying conditions and hazards.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with welding, structural work, or structural engineering concepts.

  • Experience in steel inspection or related structural inspection activities.

  • Nondestructive testing (NDT) experience or NDT certification, ideally at Level II.

  • Manlift certification or experience operating man lifts in an industrial setting.

  • Experience with overhead crane inspection or maintenance.

  • Previous experience in industrial facilities such as automotive, aerospace, nuclear, or general manufacturing environments.

  • Strong report writing skills with the ability to present technical information clearly and concisely.

  • Ability to work effectively in small teams of 2–3 people on site.

Work Environment

This role is based primarily in the field within industrial environments, including manufacturing facilities for automotive, aerospace, nuclear, and other types of plants. You will typically work in small teams of 2–3 people on site. The work involves frequent travel, often within a few hours of the main site but regularly extending across up to ten surrounding states, with overnight stays common. You will work around overhead cranes, structural steel, stairs, and other facility infrastructure, and you will use man lifts and other access equipment to reach heights up to approximately 150 feet. The environment is fast-paced and can include noise, moving equipment, and varying temperatures, requiring consistent adherence to safety procedures and use of appropriate personal protective equipment.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Canfield, OH.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $45.00/hr.
