Jacobs Senior Transportation Functional Planner in Calgary, Alberta
We’re looking for a skilled transportation engineer to help deliver and advance our Functional Planning & Design practice in Calgary. This role is ideal for someone with strong experience in highway, interchange, and corridor planning who is ready to take on more technical leadership, project management, and mentorship responsibilities.
You’ll work closely with our Practice Lead to shape high‑quality functional planning outcomes, support key client relationships, and contribute to a growing team serving the City of Calgary, Alberta Transportation, and regional partners.
What You’ll Work On
Functional Planning for:
*
Highway geometric design, interchange concepts, and major corridor upgrades
*
Urban arterial planning, corridor retrofits, and multimodal operational improvements
*
Transit‑supportive corridors, complete streets, and BRT/priority treatments
*
Alternatives development, evaluation frameworks, staging strategies, and early‑stage project definition
*
Technical analysis including traffic operations, safety review, and geometric feasibility
*
Coordination with structural, environmental, and municipal engineering teams during functional and preliminary design
*
Preparation of functional planning reports, design briefs, and Council‑ready materials
*
Application of TAC Geometric Design Guide, City of Calgary Complete Streets, NACTO, and municipal standards
How You’ll Make an Impact
*
Lead day‑to‑day delivery of functional planning and preliminary design projects
*
Serve as a trusted technical resource for clients and internal teams
*
Support engagement with City of Calgary project managers, technical committees, and community stakeholders
*
Prepare technical content for proposals and contribute to pursuit strategies
*
Mentor junior engineers, planners, and technologists in geometric design and functional planning methods
*
Contribute to a collaborative, high‑performing team culture within the Calgary Transportation group

P.Eng. (or eligibility in Alberta)
*
10+ years of experience in transportation engineering, with emphasis on functional planning and preliminary design
*
Strong technical skills in highway/interchange geometry, urban corridor planning, and multimodal design
*
Experience delivering complex, multidisciplinary transportation projects in Alberta
*
Familiarity with City of Calgary processes, standards, and project delivery expectations
*
Clear, concise communication skills — written, visual, and verbal
*
Ability to work collaboratively with planners, designers, modellers, and client teams
