Part-Time Laboratory Technician (Food Science)\ \ Position Overview and Role Description\ \ The Department of Nutrition and Food Sciences at the University of Vermont is seeking a part-time Laboratory Technician to support the daily operations of our research and teaching laboratories. The technician will help set up laboratory spaces, organize and maintain equipment, assist with research experiments, and support instructional lab activities. This position is expected to work on campus and is not eligible for telework due to the responsibilities. This position will also help ensure safe and efficient lab operations and support research and teaching in food science and processing, product development, and food analysis.\ \ Key Responsibilities and Laboratory Duties\ \ Key responsibilities include preparing, organizing, and maintaining laboratory spaces, handling and storing materials, solvents and chemicals, performing wet chemistry analyses, and operating and maintaining analytical instruments such as HPLC, GC-MS, Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS), PCR, and other laboratory equipment. The technician will also support teaching laboratories by setting up experiments, assisting students during lab sessions, explaining laboratory techniques, and maintaining a safe, organized, and welcoming learning environment. Additional responsibilities include supporting analytical method development, maintaining laboratory records and instrument logs, managing laboratory inventory and supplies, and ensuring compliance with laboratory safety protocols and best practices.\ \ Minimum and Preferred Qualifications\ \ Minimum qualifications include a bachelor\'s degree in food science, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field. Demonstrated hands-on experience with analytical instruments (HPLC, GC-MS, AAS, PCR) and wet chemistry techniques is required. Prior experience with developing analytical methods and supporting laboratory operations is highly desirable. Three to five years of relevant laboratory experience, including research, analytical, or teaching laboratory support, is preferred\ \ Position Details: Hours, Duration, and Compensation\ \ This is a part-time position, working on average 20 hours or less per week, and not eligible for UVM benefits. Starting as soon as availability, the initial appointment will be for one year but may be extended based on need and funding.
