Posting Summary
The University of Vermont seeks an experienced, people-centered leader to serve as Director of Housing & Residential Programs within University Housing & Dining Services ( UHDS ). This is a live-on campus position.
Reporting to the Executive Director of UHDS , provide strategic and day-to-day leadership for the residential portfolio and supervises the unit heads for Residential Education; Residential Learning & Academic Engagement ( RLAE ); Housing Operations; and Strategic Initiatives & Planning.
Provide leadership for a large and complex residential system serving approximately 5,800 undergraduate and graduate students across 41 residence halls and 11 residential complexes, encompassing a wide range of housing types, learning communities, and operational models.
As a primary leader overseeing other managers for the housing and residential units, responsible for translating institutional and divisional priorities into clear, actionable direction; ensuring alignment and consistency across units; and providing steady, accessible leadership that supports unit heads in delivering high-quality programs, services, and student experiences. Central to this role is coaching and supporting leaders through complex operational, people-management, and change-management challenges while fostering a healthy, collaborative, and accountable leadership culture.
Serve as the primary escalation point for housing and residential issues and functions as the Executive Director’s proxy for the residential portfolio.
Serve as member of the UHDS Executive Leadership Team, working in close partnership with the Executive Director, the Associate Director of Business Operations, and the Assistant to the Executive Director to ensure coordinated leadership, informed decision-making, and alignment across housing, dining, and business operations.
Minimum Qualifications (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
Master’s degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and additional experience.
Eight (8) years of progressively responsible leadership experience in university housing, residential life, or a closely related functional area, including experience supervising senior-level staff or unit heads.
Demonstrated experience leading complex operations within large, multifaceted residential or student services organizations.
Strong operational, organizational, and decision-making skills in high-accountability environments.
Proven ability to lead through change, coach experienced leaders, and manage competing institutional priorities.
Desirable Qualifications
Experience leading housing or residential systems serving 5,000+ students or comparable scale and complexity.
Demonstrated success supervising multiple senior leaders and building high-functioning leadership teams.
Experience working within unionized environments and shared governance structures.
Anticipated Pay Range $125,000-$130,000
Other Information
Extended hours and crisis management-related stress. Required to work evenings and weekends to respond to emergencies and attend University-wide programs as needed to support the residential experience.
Special Conditions Weekend work required, A probationary period may be required, Occasional evening and/or weekends required (if non-exempt position, may result in overtime), Required to live on-campus, This position is ineligible for telework due to the essential functions, Background Check required for this position
