Meta Technical Program Manager - XRTech in Burlingame, California

Summary:

As a Technical Program Manager on the XR Tech team at Meta, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR) experiences. You will lead cross-functional teams to design, develop, and scale crowdsourced mapping and location technologies that enable spatially aware devices and applications. Your responsibilities will include managing complex programs across perception, localization, and geospatial data pipelines, collaborating with internal and external partners, and driving innovation in how XR devices understand and interact with the physical world. This role requires a blend of technical expertise, strategic thinking, and extensive program management skills to deliver high-quality platform that meet the evolving needs of XR products and users.

Required Skills:

Technical Program Manager - XRTech Responsibilities:

  1. Lead the development and delivery of crowdsourced mapping, localization, and spatial understanding programs for XR devices and platforms, from requirements definition through launch and scaling

  2. Manage cross-functional programs spanning data collection, map building pipelines, on-device localization, and location services — coordinating across engineering, research, product, data, and operations teams

  3. Drive partnerships and integrations with internal teams across Meta (e.g., AR/VR product teams, AI/ML platforms, privacy and policy) and external partners to advance mapping and location experience

  4. Operate at different levels of abstraction, from high-level strategic planning (system architecture, technology selection, platform strategy, roadmap alignment) to tactical project management (prioritization, schedule creation, milestone definition and execution, and deliverable management)

  5. Break down the complexity of technical programs involving large-scale data systems, ML pipelines, and on-device software to enable a clear understanding of scope and deliverables across a broad audience of engineers, researchers, and leadership

  6. Proactively identify technical, privacy, legal, data quality, and cross-team dependency risks and drive creative solutions to address them

  7. Identify resources needed and work closely with engineering and research leads to maintain full visibility of program schedules, dependencies, and potential roadblocks

  8. Act as the primary communication channel for key discussions and decisions involving engineering leadership, partner teams, support functions (Legal, Privacy, Policy, Data Engineering), and external collaborators

  9. Champion program execution best practices, driving clarity on goals, metrics, and success criteria across all workstreams

  1. Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Geospatial Science, Robotics, or a similar technical field

  2. 7+ years as a technical program manager (or related role)

  3. Experience with program management methodologies like Agile and tools for tracking complex, multi-team initiatives

  4. Experience managing programs involving large-scale data systems, ML/AI pipelines, or platform software development

  5. Demonstrated experience in cross-functional team communication, authoring and presenting documents, and synthesizing complex technical information into clear narratives to move teams and initiatives forward

  2. Experience in AR/VR, robotics, autonomous systems, or consumer device programs

  3. Experience with crowdsourced data collection, large-scale 3D mapping pipelines, or location-based services

  4. Familiarity with privacy-by-design principles in the context of spatial and location data

Public Compensation:

$140,000/year to $198,000/year + bonus + equity + benefits
