DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves performing a variety of technical in-vivo and in-vitro procedures in the application of radio-nuclides for the diagnosis and treatment of disease in humans at Erie County Medical Center Corporation (ECMCC). The incumbent performs highly specialized technical work involving the use of radioactive materials for medical diagnostic and research activities. The incumbent uses modern sophisticated equipment which requires the exercise of independent judgment to ensure safety and the accuracy of test results. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a higher ranking professional or technical employee. Supervision may be exercised over lower level technical and paraprofessional employees. Does related work as required.TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:Schedules Nuclear Medicine examinations to ensure timely procedure completion taking into consideration staffing and volume status of the Nuclear Medicine Department;Arranges for and/or performs appropriate patient transport to and from the Nuclear Medicine Department;Ensures proper identification of patient and reviews and verifies diagnostic order for all appropriate order documentation as per policy and procedures of the Radiology Department;Ensures patient, visitor, family, and staff safety as per the protocols of the Nuclear Medicine Department;Prepares patients physically and mentally for procedure;Provides correct patient identification and markers on all films and images;Edits and routes electronic images as required;Selects appropriate exposure factors on imaging equipment;Operates imaging and electronic transfer equipment, including PCSA, HIS/RIS and teleradiology;Performs all quality assurance, tracking and documentation as required by all regulatory agencies;Keeps equipment in safe working order and informs upper level supervisor or appropriate repair staff of needed equipment maintenance;Reviews images for technical accuracy; determines need for retakes or additional views;Documents all procedure information as per department protocols;Inspects equipment to ensure proper and safe performance before patient procedures are initiated;Performs intravenous injections of radio pharmaceuticals;Observes patient’s condition and reports significant information to appropriate staff;Maintains proper radiation safety and infection control precautions;Prepares rooms with supplies and material needed for patient care.FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONALCHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, techniques and terminology related to the use of radio-isotopes in the medical field; good knowledge of radiation health physics; good knowledge of laboratory tests and equipment used in making blood and urine examinations; good knowledge of basic computer equipment, software and its operation; working knowledge of video display equipment; ability to use video display equipment; ability to handle radioactive materials with a high degree of safety; ability to prepare reports and maintain records; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse constituency; ability to follow detailed oral and written instructions; initiative; resourcefulness; good judgment; capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:A) Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree* in Nuclear Medicine Technology; orB) Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree* in Biology, Chemistry or Physics and completion of an education program in radiologic technology that is registered with the New York State Department of Health, the New York State Department of Education, or an accrediting organization approved by the New York State Department of Health.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:Eligibility or possession of licensure or limited/temporary permit to practice as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist as issued by the New York State Department of Health at time of application; or:Possession of license or temporary permit to practice as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist as issued by the New York State Department of Health at time of appointment; or:Possession of a license to practice as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist as issued by the New York State Department of Health at time of permanent appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment; andPossession of a Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist (CNMT) certification from the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) at time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment; andPossession of Basic Life Support (BLS) from an ECMCC approved provider within sixty (60) days of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment.NOTE*: Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education.
