Merchants Insurance Group is a leading Property and Casualty Insurer in the Northeast and is looking for an experienced Accounting Supervisor for our General Accounting team to join our Corporate Headquarters located in Buffalo, New York.
The Accounting Supervisor will become part of a dedicated General Accounting management team focusing on month end close, premium tax compliance, statutory financial statements, audited combined financial statements, maintenance of involuntary underwriting pool activity and the leadership and mentoring of General Accounting direct reports.

Merchants offers its colleagues a Hybrid work schedule. The Hybrid work schedule requires 2 full days per week in the office, with the option to work the remaining days at home or in the office. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Perform assigned month-end close responsibilities to include journal entries, preparation of reports and performing analytics.
Assist with the preparation of annual and quarterly statutory statements and supplements for submission to regulators in accordance with published guidelines.
Prepare annual audited combined financial statements with detailed work papers for support during the external audit.
Review of annual premium tax returns and estimated payments.
Compliance and review of involuntary underwriting pool premiums, losses, loss adjustment expenses and other underwriting expenses.
Administer the non-employee compensation system, including data collection and furnishing 1099s to payees and transmitting to the IRS.
Supervise all staff reporting to this position.
Qualifications & Skills:
Qualified candidates will have a 4-year degree in accounting or finance, CPA preferred.
A minimum of five years’ experience in an accounting environment.
Solid understanding of accounting principles, internal controls, general ledger transactions, and account reconciliations.
Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
Proficient in Microsoft Office to include Excel and Word.
Experience with statutory accounting principles is a plus.
Strong organizational and time management skills.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Previous supervisory experience is a plus.
Merchants Insurance Group Pay information:
Merchants Insurance Group offers a competitive pay scale. The estimated salary for this role ranges from $80,000 – $105,000 based on leveling and geography, along with an equity component and a comprehensive benefits package. This range is merely an estimate; actual compensation may deviate from this range based on skills, experience and qualifications.
