Aerotek Assembly Technician in Brookston, Indiana

Job Title: Assembly Technician

Job Description

The Assembly Technician builds metal frames for large electrical switchboards in a production bay, completing full mechanical assembly and basic wire harness assembly on each unit. Working from blueprints and simple schematics at a dedicated workbench, the technician measures components, uses hand and power tools to assemble standardized switchboard units, and ensures that each product meets quality standards. This role focuses on repetitive, high-accuracy assembly work in a clean, bright, and organized production environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble metal frames and structures for large electrical switchboards in a production bay using hand and power tools.

  • Work from blueprints and simple schematics to measure, position, and secure parts according to specifications.

  • Perform repetitive assembly tasks on standardized switchboard units, focusing on consistency, accuracy, and quality.

  • Use a tape measure, power drill, and other common hand tools to build and fasten components as required.

  • Assemble and mount basic wire harnesses on each unit by following simple electrical schematics.

  • Inspect assembled units for accuracy, fit, and finish, and correct any issues to meet quality expectations.

  • Handle and install heavier components, including copper bars weighing up to approximately 50–70 pounds, as part of the assembly process.

  • Work at heights of up to about 90 inches (approximately 7 feet) using a small step ladder to assemble the top portions of the switchboard.

  • Perform assembly tasks in various physical positions, including standing, squatting, kneeling, and using step stools throughout the shift.

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, following all required PPE and safety guidelines.

  • Collaborate with supervisors and leads during training and ramp-up, then work independently to stay productive and self-motivated.

  • Apply strong attention to detail on every unit to ensure that mechanical and wiring assemblies meet customer requirements.

Essential Skills

  • High attention to detail applied consistently throughout the assembly and wiring process.

  • Previous assembly experience in a manufacturing environment preferred, or demonstrated strong mechanical aptitude through hands-on work.

  • Proven ability to accurately read and use a tape measure.

  • Proven ability to safely and effectively use a power drill and other common hand tools.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds as needed, including handling heavier components such as copper bars weighing approximately 50–70 pounds.

  • Comfort working at heights of about 90 inches (approximately 7 feet) using a small step ladder.

  • Willingness and physical ability to work in awkward or uncomfortable positions, including frequent standing, sitting, squatting, kneeling, and using step stools.

  • Experience reading blueprints preferred for mechanical and wiring assembly tasks.

  • Ability to follow simple electrical schematics to assemble and mount wire harnesses.

  • Ownership of steel-toe or composite-toe safety footwear.

  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude, including experience working with hands in mechanic-type settings or similar side jobs.

  • Ability to stay self-motivated and productive while working individually for much of the day.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with small parts assembly and wiring while reading blueprints is highly desirable.

  • Experience in electrical or electronic assembly, including soldering, PCB work, or electrical wiring, is a plus.

  • Familiarity with mechanical assembly, electronic assembly, and general production or assembly line environments.

  • Comfort using a variety of hand and power tools for both mechanical and basic electrical assembly.

  • No high school diploma or GED required; candidates may qualify through proven mechanical aptitude and hands-on experience.

Why Work Here?

The company offers a rare opportunity to join a growing organization at an early stage, providing strong potential for advancement and long-term career growth. The work environment is intentionally designed to be bright, quiet, clean, and well-organized, creating a comfortable and productive setting that stands out from traditional manufacturing facilities. Team members work in a close-knit environment where they quickly get to know everyone on site and receive meaningful time and support from supervisors and leads. This is a long-term, contract-to-hire opportunity, with the potential to convert to full-time after approximately 90 days based on performance. Full-time employees receive a comprehensive benefits package, including paid time off, paid holidays, a 401(k) program with employer match, health, dental, and vision coverage, and a boot voucher to support required footwear. The culture values respect, safety, and trust, allowing employees to focus on their work without constant oversight once training is complete, while still enjoying the flexibility to listen to music with headphones on the floor.

Work Environment

The role is based in a modern production facility that focuses on assembling large electrical switchboards in a bay-style setup. The shop is exceptionally clean, bright, and well-lit, making it easier to see small parts and wiring clearly. Noise levels are relatively low for a manufacturing setting, with power drills and similar tools being the primary sources of sound. Employees work primarily on first shift, from approximately 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with little to no overtime at this time. The work is largely individual once training is complete, so employees should be comfortable staying self-motivated and managing their own productivity. Dress is casual and practical for a shop environment; jeans and sweatshirts are acceptable. Required personal protective equipment includes steel-toe or composite-toe footwear, safety glasses, gloves in most areas, and hearing protection in some areas. The facility supports a focused yet relaxed atmosphere, where employees may listen to music on headphones while they work, provided safety guidelines are followed.
