Hussmann Corporation Controls Engineer in Bridgeton, Missouri

Overview

The Controls Engineer is responsible for the development, validation, and release of electronic control products, software-enabled features, and supporting applications used in Hussmann equipment. This role interprets customer needs, translates them into functional control solutions, and leads cross functional activities related to new product development, customer-driven requests, and existing product improvements. The engineer will also provide technical support to internal teams and customers, ensuring reliable, safe, and effective control system performance.

Responsibilities

Controls & Electronics Engineering

  • Capture functional requirements and create design documentation for electronic control systems and PC based applications.

  • Coordinate with suppliers and development partners to improve electronic designs for cost, quality, reliability, and functionality.

  • Review system‑level control assemblies including embedded PCs, PLCs, power supplies, displays, sensors, wiring harnesses, and communication interfaces.

  • Analyze and validate application‑specific electronics and 3rd‑party components for system compatibility and regulatory compliance.

  • Perform system‑level and component‑level validation, testing, and analysis to ensure proper control operation and customer-driven functionality.

  • Support validation of software behavior in control systems, including troubleshooting and identifying improvements.

  • Contribute to the development of manuals, instructions, test procedures, user documentation, and technical bulletins.

Project Leadership & Cross‑Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with Product Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, Marketing, Field Service, and other teams to support new product development and product enhancements.

  • Serve as a technical resource for field technicians, sales teams, and customers regarding control system behavior and product functionality.

  • Create and communicate project plans, tasks, and deliverables; present concise updates at key milestones.

  • Lead and support engineering activities required to meet KPIs, timelines, and customer expectations.

  • Leverage internal and external experts to incorporate emerging technologies into Hussmann products and create competitive advantages.

Continuous Improvement & Technical Development

  • Utilize diagnostic tools, validation equipment, and instrumentation to support development and troubleshooting of electronic control systems.

  • Apply a strong understanding of refrigeration system behavior to evaluate control logic, sensor usage, and system protection strategies.

  • Participate in continuous learning to grow expertise in electronics, control systems, refrigeration principles, and software validation.

  • Support improvement of manufacturing processes through documentation, procedures, and control-related best practices.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.

  • 3+ years of hands-on experience with electronic control development, validation, or related HVAC/R control applications.

  • Experience with Bill of Material Structures and Engineering Change processes.

  • Technical understanding of refrigeration systems, sensors, and control strategies.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong analytical, problem solving, and troubleshooting abilities.

  • Experience validating control system functionality at application and component levels.

  • PLCs, embedded systems, ladder logic, structured text, or basic programming languages.

  • Networking protocols (Ethernet, IP, UDP) and control protocols (CAN, BACnet, Modbus).

  • Altium or other EDA tools (a plus, not required).

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong analytical, problem solving, and troubleshooting abilities.

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment.

  • Strong ownership, accountability, and solution driven mindset.
