Work Week: Typically, Monday through Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm. Schedule subject to change to meet the needs of the Division.

Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)

  • Assists the Recreation Program Manager in planning, organizing, directing, and supervising quality Recreation programs and events for diverse groups of all ages, including program design, implementation, and evaluation.

  • Supports the Recreation Program Manager in the daily operations for assigned division, including setting priorities and monitoring all completed work and work in progress to ensure all work is completed in a timely and efficient manner.

  • Performs the hiring, training, and supervising of assigned personnel including scheduling staff according to Division needs, conducting employee evaluations, and taking or recommending disciplinary actions in accordance with established City policies and procedures.

  • Provides or arranges for staff training within functional area of assignment.

  • Performs implementation of work programs designed to meet the annual and long-term objectives of the Department.

  • Coordinates and/or assists in the coordination of public relations activities such as interviews and Recreation program and event marketing via various communications channels in conjunction with the Communications Team.

  • Reviews facility checks and determines fees for cleaning services or refund of deposit.

  • Assists the assigned Supervisor in monitoring expenditures, maintaining related reports and records, compiling budget data, and reviewing purchase orders and expenditures for approval.

  • Makes recommendations for the annual operating budget for assigned areas of responsibility.

  • Confers with the assigned Supervisor to establish and implement goals and policies, including identifying resources needed, securing necessary facilities, making recommendations, and implementing new goals or policies.

  • Serves as liaison for parents, participants, vendors, residents, and businesses and maintains an open line of communication.

  • Utilizes City vehicles to transport equipment and supplies to City parks and facilities for camps and events as needed.

  • Manages inventory of equipment and supplies.

  • Administers first aid, CPR, and use of AED as needed.

  • Assists with negotiation of contracts and agreements with service providers, user groups, and other professionals.

  • Provides administrative assistance to the Recreation Manager as required.

  • Communicates with all related personnel in efforts to encourage, motivate, promote leadership, and encourages teamwork in accomplishing set forth objectives.

  • Promotes accomplishment of the Recreation Division’s vision, mission and goals.

  • Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner.

  • Acts as a liaison between the Recreation Division and other City departments, divisions, outside agencies, media, and the general public.

  • Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees.

  • Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems.

  • Serves as the Recreation Program Manager in his/her absence.

  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions, reviews publications and materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas.

  • Performs other duties consistent with the role and function of this classification.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Outdoor Recreation and Education, Parks Tourism and Recreation Management, or a closely related field, and

  • Considerable (at least three (3) years) experience in a related recreational field, including at least one (1) year of supervisory experience, or

  • Any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Substantial knowledge of personnel administration.

  • Substantial knowledge of administering safe recreational programs.

  • Substantial knowledge of all pertinent Federal, State, and local laws and regulations.

  • Substantial knowledge of operating and maintaining recreational facilities and equipment.

  • Substantial knowledge of child development and behavior.

  • Knowledge of program marketing and outreach.

  • Some knowledge of office procedures, practices, and equipment including filing systems and methods of communication.

  • Some knowledge of office filing systems and procedures including electronic databases.

  • Some knowledge of budgeting and budget administration.

  • Ability to effectively oversee department programs and operations.

  • Ability to maintain required certifications.

  • Ability to serve as an effective department liaison to school officials, recreation groups, and the general public.

  • Ability to effectively supervise, motivate, and evaluate the work of assigned personnel.

  • Ability to effectively coordinate and conduct public meetings, speaking engagements, media contacts and other public relations events and promote department programs and interests.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language.

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions.

  • Ability to deal with diverse groups of people, including situations in which individuals may be upset over some issue involved with City activities and policies.

  • Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations.

  • Ability to operate a personal computer using advanced software applications appropriate to assigned tasks.

  • Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions.

  • Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines.

  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology.

  • Demonstrates integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness and the use of the appropriate levels of discretion in the performance of assigned tasks.

Required Special Qualifications

  • Must possess a current valid driver’s license and have the ability to obtain a Montana Driver’s license within 60 days of employment.

  • Must possess or be able to obtain Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED certifications within 60 days of employment.
