The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Global Systems Laboratory (GSL) is a world leader in applying cutting-edge research and innovative IT systems to improve weather and environmental forecasting across the globe. Based in Boulder, Colorado, GSL's mission supports the development and integration of advanced computing, modeling, artificial intelligence, and software engineering to meet the growing needs of the scientific and environmental community.
RIVA Solutions supports NOAA GSL through a range of IT, systems engineering, cybersecurity, and DevOps services. Our team plays a critical role in maintaining secure, high-performance computing environments that enable NOAA's researchers and operational teams to deliver next-generation climate, weather, and environmental solutions for the nation.
Position Overview
RIVA Solutions is seeking a Systems Engineer II to support the Global Systems Laboratory (GSL) at NOAA in Boulder, CO. This role will focus on the configuration, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of RedHat and other Linux distributions, with additional support for Mac and Windows desktops. The incumbent will work independently and collaboratively to ensure the stability and performance of the IT environment, including smart card integration, VM support, and secure systems architecture.
Core Responsibilities
Provide basic Mac and Windows support
Provide advanced Linux support (RedHat and other distros)
Install and upgrade operating systems
Configure and install peripheral devices
Manage and support virtual infrastructures
Install and configure smart card hardware/software
Apply industry-standard security strategies
Install third-party software
Conduct performance analysis and system tuning
Support clustered Linux systems and distributed computing
Document system configurations (hardware/software/wiring)
Set up automated monitoring and diagnostics
Required Qualifications
Minimum 4 years of work experience in a heterogeneous, multi-system Linux environment
Experience administering RedHat, other Linux distros, Mac, and Windows
Experience supporting heterogeneous environments connected to the internet
Working knowledge of DNS, NIS, NFS, TCP/IP, basic routing
Experience with X Window applications and X terminal setup
Experience supporting users with shell scripting and environment troubleshooting
Experience deploying/managing VMs, desktops, and laptops
Experience supporting operational systems in the field
Ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Experience with cloud infrastructure deployments is a plus
Salary
Up to $110,000 (based on experience)
