Job Description

Position Summary

Boston Ship Repair is seeking skilled Outside Machinists to perform repair, maintenance, and overhaul work on a wide range of shipboard machinery. This role involves hands-on work in an active shipyard environment supporting vessel operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Install, align, and repair pumps, motors, generators, propellers, shafting, bearings, compressors, and hydraulic systems

  • Operate, troubleshoot, and repair hydraulic equipment and systems

  • Use torque wrenches (metric and standard) to meet precise specifications

  • Perform alignments using dial indicators, micrometers, and other precision tools

  • Conduct dock and sea trials to verify equipment performance after repairs

  • Read and interpret blueprints, manuals, and job specifications

  • Set up and operate portable machine tools, including boring bars, drills, and grinders

  • Work on large vessels in an active shipyard environment

  • Safely perform work in confined spaces, at heights, and in varying conditions

Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of marine, industrial, or shipyard mechanical experience preferred

  • Strong knowledge of hydraulic systems and torque applications

  • Skilled in the use of hand tools, measuring instruments, and alignment equipment

  • Ability to read and follow technical drawings and detailed instructions

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in confined spaces

  • Strong commitment to safety and quality workmanship

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Shipyard and shipboard conditions, including heat, cold, humidity, noise, and moving equipment

  • Requires standing, climbing, kneeling, and lifting throughout the day
