Robert Half Director of Finance (Accounting) in Boston, Massachusetts

Description

We are seeking a hands‑on Director of Finance with a strong accounting focus to lead financial operations for a respected for‑profit educational institution. This role is ideal for a detail‑oriented accounting leader who owns transaction processing through month‑end close, manages accruals, and ensures timely, GAAP‑compliant financial reporting. Key Responsibilities

  • Own full-cycle accounting: AP, AR, payroll coordination, general ledger maintenance, and reconciliations.

  • Lead month‑end and year‑end close processes; prepare accurate accruals and journal entries.

  • Produce monthly financial statements, variance analysis, and management reports.

  • Oversee budgeting, forecasting, and cash‑flow monitoring.

  • Implement and maintain internal controls and accounting policies to ensure compliance.

  • Serve as primary liaison for external auditors and tax preparers; support audit processes.

  • Supervise and develop accounting staff; delegate transactional work and review deliverables.

  • Drive continuous improvement of accounting systems and processes (ERP experience preferred).

  • Partner with executive leadership on strategic financial initiatives and decision‑making.

    Requirements

  • 6+ years of progressive, hands-on accounting experience including transactional processing through close.

  • Demonstrated experience preparing and managing accruals.

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and internal control best practices.

  • Proven ability to prepare financial statements and perform variance analyses.

  • Experience supervising accounting staff and improving process efficiency.

  • Proficiency with accounting software/ERP systems and Excel.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or equivalent strongly preferred.

  • Excellent attention to detail, organization, and communication skills.
