The Pool Lifeguard position is essential in ensuring the safety and well-being of all patrons using our aquatics facilities. This role involves maintaining surveillance and enforcing pool regulations, aiding and rescuing troubled bathers in emergencies, and administering First Aid and CPR as needed. This position does related work as required and is under regular supervision.

American Red Cross - Lifeguarding and CPR for the Professional Rescuer

Essential Functions

  • Monitors activities in and near the water through patron surveillance.

  • Enforces facility safety rules and regulations by educating patrons.

  • Recognizes and provides quick response to all emergencies including rescue, First Aid and CPR.

  • Provide swimming instruction to individuals or groups.

Related tasks:

  • Cleans the pool and related facilities on a regular basis.

  • Meets and greets patrons, resolves conflicts, explains pool rules, regulations, and policies.

  • Performs pool opening and closing procedures.

  • Cleans and maintains swimming pool filters and related facilities.

  • Takes part in training programs to improve lifeguarding skills.

  • Registers instruction program participants.

  • Sells pool permits, operates cash register.

  • Assists with special events.

  • Performs related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Water safety rules and of lifesaving and first aid practices and techniques.

  • Cleaning and maintenance requirements for large pools and related equipment and supplies.

Skilled in:

  • Swimming, demonstrating considerable strength and proficiency.

  • Providing excellent customer service to pool visitors.

  • Maintaining vigilance and quickly identifying potential hazards.

  • Administering first aid, CPR, and AED in emergencies.

Ability to:

  • Maintain chemical balance of pool water.

  • Work safely with toxic chemicals.

  • Enforces rules and remains calm under stress.

  • Clean and maintain a swimming pool and related facilities.

  • Pass annual requalification testing.

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.

  • Must possess current certifications through the American Red Cross in Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid.

PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS

  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Possession of a valid State of Florida Class "E" driver's license with no more than six (6) points in a three (3) year period.

  • Ability to pass American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and Oxygen Administration classes (AEO) during first year of employment.

LOCATION:

Positions available at both Meadows Park Pool and The Swim & Racquet Center

SCHEDULE:

Must be available to work at least two full shifts (7:00 am - 5:15 pm) and one-half shift (5–6-hour day) per week.

20 - 25 hours per week

Varied hours including days, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.

CITY OF BOCA RATON - BENEFITS SUMMARY

Part-Time Employees

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: To be eligible to receive Paid Leave and to contribute to the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan, a part-time employee must have worked at least 1,040 hours in the prior fiscal year

PAID LEAVE: Employees who work a minimum of 1,040 hours per fiscal year will receive twelve (12) hours of Paid Leave on October 1st. This Paid Leave shall be used no later than September 30th of that fiscal year or it will be forfeited. These hours may not accumulate and may only be granted with the approval of the employee's supervisor. This paid leave has no cash value at separation of employment.

MISSION SQUARE 457 DEFERRED COMPENSATION PLAN: Employees who work a minimum of 1,040 hours per fiscal year will be allowed to participate in the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan. The City will not provide any matching funds.
