Senior Software Engineer – ModFlex, Locations & Digital Shelf Labels

About the Team

The ModFlex, Locations & Digital Shelf Labels team builds and maintains the core systems that power real-time store operations at Walmart scale. We are the Single Source of Truth (SSOT) for merchandise locations — managing over 600 million merchandise location records across thousands of Walmart stores. As Digital Shelf Labels (DSL) expands to Sam’s Club and beyond, we’re scaling to support a comparable footprint of electronically labeled items across the entire chain. Our platforms are mission-critical — downstream consumers depend on our systems at peak throughputs exceeding 10,000 transactions per second, making reliability, consistency, and performance non-negotiable. We operate at the intersection of physical retail and distributed systems engineering, where every architectural decision has real consequences on store shelves worldwide.

What You’ll Do

As a Senior Software Engineer, you’ll own the design and delivery of scalable backend services and data pipelines that power store operations, merchandise location management, and electronic shelf label infrastructure at this scale. You’ll also contribute to the React Native mobile surfaces that associates use on the floor every day.

Backend Engineering (Primary Focus 70%)

• Design and build high-throughput, event-driven microservices usingJava and Spring Boot that serve as the backbone for the SSOT of merchandise locations — a dataset of600M+ records growing with every new DSL rollout

• Architect and maintainKafka-based event streaming pipelines handling item location changes, replenishment updates, and ESL tag events at>10K TPS peaks across thousands of stores

• Own the full data lifecycle — from schema design and migrations (MySQL) to JPA/Hibernate access patterns through shared data access layers — optimized for read/write performance at massive scale

• Build resilient service integrations usingResilience4j (circuit breakers, retry policies, rate limiting) ensuring downstream consumers — operating at peak TPS — experience consistent, low-latency responses

• Implement and maintain multi-moduleMaven builds across a 12+ module microservice architecture

• Write production-ready code with strong observability — structured logging toOpenObserve/Splunk, meaningful metrics, and alerting that matters at scale

• Contribute to CI/CD pipelines viaLooper (Jenkins) for automated build, test, and deployment workflows

• Deploy and operate services onKubernetes (KITT), understanding pod lifecycle, scaling strategies, and deployment configurations for high-availability systems

Frontend Engineering (Secondary Focus 30%)

• Build and maintain features in themod-flex React Native mini-app running inside the Me@Walmart (Allspark) container

• Work withTypeScript, Redux, and React Navigation to deliver associate-facing experiences that surface real-time location and DSL data

• Consume REST APIs from backend services with proper error handling and state management

• Maintain95%+ Jest test coverage standards for all frontend contributions

• Collaborate with designers and product managers to ship intuitive, performant mobile experiences

What We’re Looking For

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience

• 4+ years of software engineering experience with a strong backend focus

• Strong proficiency inJava and Spring Boot — you’ve built and shipped production microservices

• Hands-on experience withKafka or similar event streaming platforms — ideally at high-throughput, production scale

• Solid understanding ofrelational databases (MySQL or equivalent) — schema design, query optimization, and ORM patterns tuned for large datasets

• Demonstrated ability to design systems withhigh availability and performance in mind — you think about consistency, latency, and failure modes

• Experience withREST API design — building and consuming APIs across service boundaries at scale

• Familiarity withKubernetes and containerized service deployments

• Experience withCI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, Looper, or equivalent)

• Working knowledge of frontend development —React, React Native, or TypeScript experience is a plus

• Strong debugging and observability skills — comfortable querying logs and tracing issues in production

• Comfortable in a distributed team environment with asynchronous communication

Nice to Have

• Experience with theAllspark / Me@Walmart mini-app framework

• Familiarity withAvro schema serialization for Kafka topics

• Knowledge ofResilience4j patterns — circuit breakers, retry, rate limiting

• Experience withAzure Cosmos DB or similar NoSQL data stores

• Python experience (ML/computer vision adjacent work)

Bentonville, Arkansas US-09050: The annual salary range for this position is $90,000.00 - $180,000.00

Sunnyvale, California US-04396: The annual salary range for this position is $117,000.00 - $234,000.00 Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Additional compensation for certain positions may also include :
