About the job

Google Cloud's software engineers develop the next-generation technologies that change how billions of users connect, explore, and interact with information and one another. We're looking for engineers who bring fresh ideas from all areas, including information retrieval, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking and data storage, security, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, UI design and mobile; the list goes on and is growing every day. As a software engineer, you will work on a specific project critical to Google Cloud's needs with opportunities to switch teams and projects as you and our fast-paced business grow and evolve. You will anticipate our customer needs and be empowered to act like an owner, take action and innovate. We need our engineers to be versatile, display leadership qualities and be enthusiastic to take on new problems across the full-stack as we continue to push technology forward.

The Google Cloud NetApp Volumes (GCNV) Control Plane team is dedicated in architecting and scaling the next generation of enterprise-grade managed file storage on Google Cloud. We bridge the gap between high-level cloud orchestration and low-level storage performance, ensuring seamless integration between our control systems and the underlying data plane. Our focus is on engineering high-availability zonal offerings and industry-leading data durability to support mission-critical workloads at hyperscale. By optimizing vital key performance indicators (KPIs), from provisioning latency to Recovery Point Objective (RPO)/Recovery Time Objective (RTO) goals, we deliver a resilient, high-performance storage ecosystem. We operate at the intersection of distributed systems and storage engineering to provide customers with a fully managed file service experience.

Google Cloud accelerates every organization’s ability to digitally transform its business and industry. We deliver enterprise-grade solutions that leverage Google’s cutting-edge technology, and tools that help developers build more sustainably. Customers in more than 200 countries and territories turn to Google Cloud as their trusted partner to enable growth and solve their most critical business problems.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the primary technical liaison between the GCNV Control Plane and the Data Plane (DP) teams. Align orchestration logic with the high-performance requirements of the underlying NetApp ONTAP storage.

  • Collaborate with the NetApp DP team to influence the DP roadmap, ensuring features are optimized and performant for Google Cloud’s distributed architecture.

  • Lead the design of end-to-end workflows that span from user-facing APIs down to low-level volume provisioning and data movement.

  • Guide executive and mid-level engineers across both CP and DP teams, fostering a culture of performance-first engineering.

  • Identify and resolve systemic bottlenecks across the stack (e.g., API latency, provisioning speed, and I/O throughput) to meet sub-millisecond latency goals.
