Job Information
Amazon Principal Program Manager, Retail Business Services in Bengaluru, India
Description
ABOUT THE ROLE
Amazon strives to be the world's most customer-centric company. Retail Business Services (RBS) is a horizontal organization that drives outsized impact across Amazon's businesses — including Everyday Essentials, Amazon Business, Pharmacy and many more — by delivering scalable tools, programs, and operational mechanisms that accelerate growth and reduce cost across the store.
We are seeking a Principal Program Manager to join RBS's Priority Execution & Governance function. This role will own the end-to-end strategy and execution rhythm that ensures RBS's portfolio of initiatives aligns with Amazon's annual priorities, delivers early-year impact, and—given the scale and business criticality—operates under rigorous governance mechanisms.
This leader will operate at the intersection of RBS's single-threaded leader (STL) domains and Amazon's priority business teams, ensuring priority-first sequencing, cross-team dependency resolution, and disciplined monthly and quarterly governance cadences. The role owns the monthly VP review for this remit and partners directly with VP-level organizations across Amazon — including Amazon Catalog Systems & Services, Customer Experience, Selling Partner Services, and category leadership teams — to unblock execution and drive shared business outcomes.
The Principal Program Manager is a bar-raising communicator (verbal and written), comfortable presenting to VP and SVP audiences, and technically adept with the ability to influence across VP organizations. This leader excels at translating complex cross-organizational dependencies into clear priorities, mechanisms, and measurable results.
Key job responsibilities
Strategic Priority Management & Sequencing
Define and own the priority-first sequencing framework across RBS's portfolio, ensuring Amazon's annual priorities receive early-year resourcing and delivery focus
Identify opportunities beyond current STL charters and drive discussions toward new strategic initiatives that address emerging business needs
Understand the horizontal nature of RBS and how priority-first sequencing must be applied across each single-threaded leader's domain to maximize in-year impact on Amazon's top priorities
Research and identify gaps that may require initiatives beyond RBS's current portfolio, driving strategic discussions to address emerging needs
Partner with STLs to translate their domain roadmaps into priority-sequenced execution plans with clear milestones, early-year delivery gates, and escalation paths
Governance & Review Mechanisms
Own the governance cadence: design and run the monthly VP review, QBR reviews, and monthly business leader reviews that track progress toward business impact and cost reduction targets, ensuring review formats surface the right information at the right altitude for VP and SVP audiences
Develop mechanisms that prevent back-loaded execution — including leading indicators, monthly trajectory audits, and early warning systems for off-track initiatives
Build and operate early warning systems and trajectory audits that catch back-loaded execution patterns and trigger corrective action before impact is lost
Cross-Organizational Collaboration & Dependency Management
Build and maintain the cross-team dependency map across RBS initiatives and priority business teams (Everyday Essentials, Amazon Business, Pharmacy, etc.), identify which teams must unblock execution, assign ownership, and drive resolution through structured mechanisms
Collaborate across VP-level organizations to align on shared priorities, resolve resource contention, and build synergies between multiple tech, product, and program teams
Partner with engineering and product teams to understand technical dependencies, assess feasibility, and ensure priority initiatives have the right technical foundation for scale
Influence across VP-level organizations without direct authority — earn trust through clarity of thought, reliability of mechanisms, and consistent delivery of results
Measurement & Impact Standardization
Standardize the measurement methodology for business impact and cost reduction claims across RBS, ensuring consistent, auditable definitions that hold up at VP and SVP forums
Bring data-driven business judgment to governance decisions — define impact metrics in standardized, measurable terms and hold teams accountable to those definitions
Leadership & Communication
Communicate RBS's priority execution progress, risks, and results to senior leadership through crisp written narratives and review documents
Mentor and develop a team of program managers, holding the organization to a high standard of operational rigor, strategic clarity, and delivery excellence
Develop program managers who can independently own STL-level governance relationships and drive priority execution within their assigned domains
Operate comfortably in ambiguity — can take a voice-note-level mental model and turn it into a structured operating plan with clear owners, timelines, and success metrics
Basic Qualifications
10+ years of program or project management experience, or a Bachelor's degree and 5+ years of delivering cross functional projects experience
Experience owning program strategy, end to end delivery, and communicating results to senior leadership
Experience working in a matrixed environment, influencing strategy, and achieving goals by working across the organization
Bachelor's degree, or MBA in computer science, engineering, analytics, mathematics, statistics, IT or equivalent
- 5+ years of experience influencing and driving outcomes at the CxO level
Experience delivering projects within scope, time, budget and quality
Master's degree or above in management, business administration, economics, engineering, marketing
- Experience in retail, e-commerce, or marketplace businesses at scale
- Track record of defining and operating governance mechanisms (QBRs, MBRs, VP reviews) for large cross-functional programs
- Experience standardizing impact measurement methodologies across diverse initiative types
- Demonstrated ability to influence without authority across senior stakeholders
- Strong written communication skills, including experience authoring 6-pagers and narratives for VP/SVP audiences
- Technical depth with ability to engage with engineering and product teams on implementation details
- Experience identifying strategic opportunities and building 0-1 initiatives from concept to execution
