Primary Purpose
The GIS Intern will perform the duties listed below for the US Bureau of Land Management.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Data management -
Learn the departmental standards for extensive data organization and storage strategies, security practices, methods of ensuring accuracy, and complying with departmental metadata policies as outlined by the BLM / DOI .
Create a word document for project folders containing a detailed project description
Add dates and information from scanned maps
Learn to navigate complex folder structures, differentiating between the computer servers and the cloud for project folders
GIS Field collection project management – cooperate with many varied specialists and work to identify practiced methods of field data collection and required Project Management procedures and communications to ensure efficient and quality work throughout large-scale projects.
Learn the necessary steps of field preparation for long days in remote areas
Utilize time effectively while working around others’ schedules, integrating the necessary GIS tools for the job
Digital cartography -
Create and edit maps, and learn the cartographic standards and tools that make published BLM maps easy to identify and interpret while displaying all necessary information.
Learn and use the BLM layout templates and styles to create professional, federal-grade maps
Practice using stylized symbology for features, avoiding simple points, lines, and polygons for easy-to-read maps

Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of GIS
Knowledge of planning, implementing, and supporting geospatial projects
Strong interpersonal, organizational, and oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work independently and to use good judgment with respect to priorities and deadlines.
Ability to communicate information effectively regarding College policies and procedures to students.
Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and faculty from diverse backgrounds.
Ability to manage conflicts within and/or between groups and to work in a team environment.
Ability to develop strong working relationships with people from different cultural backgrounds and other aspects of human diversity.
Ability to monitor budgets and other administrative processes in a timely and professional manner.
Ability to meet deadlines, set work priorities, and manage workload.
Ability to use software programs and database systems which include Microsoft Office Suite, email, website editing, basic desktop publishing, and modern office equipment.
Ergonomic Requirements
Regular office hours are established between 9 am – 3 pm during the workweek. A flexible work schedule, including nights and weekends, may be necessary due to the nature of the responsibilities.
Incumbent must be able to function effectively indoors in an office environment engaged in work of primarily a sedentary nature. Requires the ability to work at a workstation for extended periods. Requires to write, read written materials and computer screens, and ability to use telephonic conversations. Occasional lifting up to 25lbs. All individuals are required to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Minimum Requirements
Education:
Associates coursework in GIS .
