Amazon is seeking a Systems Development Engineer II to support the Amazon Logistics Worldwide Central Engineering team. This individual will work cross-functionally with multiple teams to optimize current processes, equipment, procedures, and electrical/controls specifications in our delivery stations. The role focuses on developing and implementing process improvement initiatives with emphasis on AB PLC/HMI and vision systems development.
This Systems Development Engineer II will contribute to all aspects of an agile systems development life cycle including design, architecture, development, documentation, testing, and operations. Working with limited guidance, this position will be responsible for designing, managing, and executing improvements to delivery station processes, equipment, and operations. This role offers the opportunity to influence team goals and contribute to innovative projects that advance the intelligence of our last mile business.
Key job responsibilities
System Development Engineers are responsible for designing and developing industrial control systems and PLC programs for Material Handling Equipment (MHE) across Amazon Logistics North America.
Core Technical Responsibilities:
Design and develop industrial control systems and PLC programs for Material Handling Equipment (MHE) across Amazon Logistics delivery stations
Implement control systems using Allen Bradley PLCs and CODESYS with limited guidance
Develop hardware/firmware interfaces and contribute to IoT solutions
Create and maintain PLC/IPC/HMI software and vision systems
Support the establishment of electrical and controls design standards
Contribute to system health monitoring and automation improvements
Project Execution:
Work cross-functionally with multiple teams to deliver control system projects
Participate in technical design reviews for control systems and simulations
Coordinate with design teams and vendors to meet project goals
Implement process improvements and technical solutions
Evaluate and integrate new MHE technologies
Technical Skills:
Industrial networks (Ethernet, safety over Ethernet IP)
Material handling control systems
IPCs and barcode scanners
Conveyor hardware integration
AB PLC/HMI and vision systems development
Collaboration:
Influence team goals through effective cross-functional communication
Work with internal and external partners to optimize delivery station processes
Provide clear documentation and participate in technical reviews
A day in the life
Your work is hands-on and multi-disciplinary. You'll collaborate with vendors, cross-functional engineers, and project teams to write and troubleshoot PLC code (Allen Bradley, CODESYS), participate in design reviews, document technical solutions, and build proof-of-concepts. Daily activities include implementing AB PLC/HMI and vision systems for delivery station material handling equipment, coordinating with field engineering and operations teams, and managing stakeholder expectations through clear communication. You'll solve problems related to control system optimization, equipment troubleshooting, and process improvements that help delivery stations meet customer commitments.
About the team
The AMZL Central Engineering organization designs, pilots, and deploys automation technologies within the AMZL network, owning the full life-cycle from concept to pilot to full-scale deployment and continuous improvement post-deployment. The team integrates advanced mechanical and control systems expertise to deliver comprehensive machine-level solutions for Amazon's delivery station network. We uphold and continuously elevate quality standards in material handling equipment (MHE) through refined engineering processes, data-driven strategies, and systematic improvements that enhance the reliability and sophistication of automated solutions enabling Amazon's last mile business to scale efficiently.
Basic Qualifications
Experience in automating, deploying, and supporting large-scale infrastructure
Experience programming with at least one modern language such as Python, Ruby, Golang, Java, C++, C#, Rust
Experience with Linux/Unix
Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
4+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
Experience designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with distributed systems at scale
Master's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or equivalent

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
